Gundam Seed - After War: Watch out, Astrays! The ZAKU Strikes! [Episode 183446]

by Yasanagi

Barry started to feel better as he and Jean put more distance between them and the PLANT that they had escaped from. They had been fortunate that they had been able to 'borrow' the standard beam rifle that came with the GuAIZ mobile suits that ZAFT produced. Their own beam rifles had been destroyed during that battle against the Raider. They still had their shields though so that counted for something.

Even though his feelings of apprehension had lightened, there were two things still on his mind. The first thing concerned the batteries in their mobile suits. They can last a while but they can only go so far before their fuel runs out. And second, he had no doubt in his mind that ZAFT would send a few units on a pursuit course to try and take them into custody for questions. If possible, both he and Jean want to avoid combat but there's a good chance that it can't be helped. The most likely scenario was that a few GuAIZ units would go after them but if their luck holds out, it may be just a GINN or CGUE squadron.

His musings were interrupted by Jean's voice. "Barry, we got a tailgunner. And it's slowly gaining on us..."

Fantastic... is there anything else that can ruin his day?

"I can't identify what model it is. It's most likely a prototype unit outfitted with some powerful weapons. I doubt that we can outrun it..." It didn't take a Super Coordinator to figure out what Jean was implying.

Barry hung his head in frustration. He just had to jinx himself, didn't he?

'Crap... what am I going to do?' As he finished that thought, his radio started acting up. Jean had a small startled look on his face. 'The pilot is... hailing us?' He cautiously opened a channel while maintaining his course.

"This is Courtney Hieronymus of the Zodiac Alliance Freedom Treaty 601st Technical Evaluation Team. In accordance with the laws enacted by the PLANT Supreme Council and as a member of ZAFT, I am obligated to place the two of you into custody. Please stand down and I will guarantee that the two of you will not be harmed."

He pressed a button on his console to respond. "The warning is appreciated but in the light of current events, we cannot comply. Our apologies."

A chuckle came from the other end. "Just as I thought... the infamous Glittering Star J. I wasn't certain if that unit was yours even though it had the same paint scheme as your GINN and as your Long Dagger but now I can confirm that it really is you. I heard that you were really quite an outstanding guy before the war."

"I don't suppose you can just turn the other way, can you?"

"Afraid not. Even if I could just ignore how the two of you barged in on a confidential technical evaluation, your charges for desertion have not yet been lifted. You will be coming with me one way or the other."

His grip on his control sticks tightened. "You know we can't do that."

"I thought so. Good luck then... Lieutenant..." The transmission immediately cut off and the two railguns mounted on the ZAKU's hips fired two shots at both units.

Jean quickly switched to his standard channel. "Scatter and return fire!!" The two units took off in opposite directions and made a tight turn before firing with their own beam rifles.

The yellow ZAKU raised its shield to block the shots as it charged forward. The unit's right hand immediately went to its backpack and activated a blade tomahawk. Barry's unit placed the beam rifle away and drew a beam sabre of its own before charging in to meet the ZAKU in melee combat.
