Kira found it hard to concentrate on his work as the wave of negative emotions kept rising in his heart. He wondered why that stranger had to bring up those topics. It was as if he was looking for something that only Kira himself could confirm.
Realizing that it was a futile effort to perform any sort of maintenance with the mood he is in now, he activated his personal security system for the Freedom before stepping out of the cockpit. The weightlessness of space helped to calm him down partially but old war memories continued to linger.
"AAAUUUGGGHHH!!!!"
The young pilot shivered as the scream of his first kill on Heliopolis replayed itself. Although he never really heard it, he felt it within his soul the minute he plowed his sword through the enemy GINN. That same feeling kept repeating itself every time he killed someone while he was in the Strike.
Of course, one may say that anybody who experiences killing like that after living a relatively long life of peace and quiet can feel the same as he did. The weak willed would probably die or go insane while the stronger ones were able to keep moving forward at different paces.
'Dammit... I've gotta get my mind off this.'
He made his way to the Eternal's mess hall intending to get something to eat when he noticed his friend Athrun staring endlessly into space, his expression perfectly neutral. From his posture though, Kira recognized that Athrun was currently doing some serious thinking on something big, most likely a personal matter. He had the same habit back when the two grew up on the Lunar Colony.
He cleared his throat a little before calling out to his friend. "What's new, Athrun?"
"Kira." The other youth barely acknowledged his friend.
He came to a stop next to the Justice's pilot. "Personal matters, I presume?"
"How did you know?"
A weak chuckle escaped Kira's lips. "Old habits die hard."
"Hn." He sighed briefly. "I'm not in the best mood to talk about it now although your concern is appreciated."
"Then don't talk. You interested in joining me for a snack? I know for a fact that Lacus has a chocolate cheesecake hidden somewhere in one of the mess hall fridges."
Athrun had a partially surprised look as he followed Kira. "She actually brought something like that on board the ship?"
The pilot of the Freedom started rummaging through one of the three fridges that were present in the mess hall. "Considering that they were all planning to defect from the start, I wouldn't be surprised if they put in a lot of supplies for the crew to last a good while." He emerged a little bit later, holding the treat in his hands. "You mind getting some plates?"
"Sure." It didn't take long for him to find some dishes and soon Kira was cutting a slice of cake for the both of them. "Do you think she would mind that we ate the cake?"
"If she asks, I'll just say that it went towards a good cause of cheering up a friend."
"... thanks."
