But the fact was that there were certain problems with just being able to walk in and get any kind of specialized slave. One might be able to get one, but there were certain factors that had to be weighed in. Such skills did tend to cost more than general abilities, and appealing looks weren't exactly standard material. Then there was the fact that one might not actually have any sort of real need for whatever skill that slave might have. Just the 'inventory' available would curtail a lot of opportunities, since one would have to pick from the slaves that they could get. And there was no guarantee that they would even get someone who would like them, or that they could like, never mind enjoying any favors that the slave might have to offer.
Ranma knew all of this, and had never been all that particularly certain of just why people tended to be so focused on that sort of thing. It wasn't like everyone had their own slave, and many times, it was something done in groups, such as for families. With both parents working, it could be best to have a slave working as a housekeeper or nanny. Or a store might profit from having to pay for room and board, rather than wages for a slave worker. Someone getting their own personal slave was unusual enough that it would impress others, who would then possibly lament on how their own wishes in that direction wouldn't be fulfilled.
Well, he owned a slave, and he was thankful for that. She might not have been some sort of skilled warrior, a technical wizard, or even empowered, but that was fine by him. What he got from her was a supportive skill set that complimented his, and that was more than satisfactory. Despite the opportunities that would have come from having a slave that he could spar with, having someone around who could cover the stuff that he wouldn't manage was really helpful.
Now, he just wished that other people would stop pestering him over such things, since he wasn't about to do what anyone else wanted with:
