"Come in," she said.
An old man with a scraggly white beard and white hair entered in the room. He was carrying some parchments stuffed in a leather bag.
"You are the person who managed to get me free of jail?" the man said.
"Yes, I am. You are Diol the Chimera maker?"
The old man nodded. The woman pointed at the bag and then turned her hand up to receive it. Diol placed the bag in the woman's grasp. The woman started looking through the papers that Diol had brought with him. She stopped at one paper and then stared at Diol.
"Could you lower you hood. I'd like to see who I'm working with," Diol said.
The woman shook her head. "I have my reasons. I see you met Lina Inverse. This is an interesting chimera design that you planned."
Diol puffed up his chest in pride and said, "Yes. If I could have completed it, it would have been the ultimate chimera."
"I said it was interesting, I didn't say it was good," the woman retorted.
Diol's shoulders slumped, as the woman pulled out a piece of paper and handed to Diol.
"This is a sketch of a person by name of Zelgadis Greywords. Unlike your chimera designs, Zelgadis is able to blend into crowds and can strike without warning. Zelgadis is one-third human, one-third stone golem, and one-third blow demon."
Diol studied the sketch with great intensity. He compared it to some of his designs. "It's a very impressive design. Why did you show it to me?"
"The person who turned Zelgadis into that is dead. I need someone who is good at chimera making to try to replicate that effect," the woman replied and pulled two bottles out of her robe and placed them on the table.
Glancing from the sketch to the bottles, Diol nodded. "I should be able to duplicate this effect. I just need a stone golem and a blow demon."
"No. Replicate, not duplicate. I want an improved version of that chimera. One of those bottles holds a piece of pure orihalcum I took from an orihalcum golem. The other contains blood from something far more powerful than a blow demon. I found a lab from before the Dark Resurrection War and the blood was stored in that vial."
Diol looked at the bottles with longing, as he asked, "I'll get started right away."
"No, you won't. The person I want you to turn into a chimera is Lina Inverse," the woman said.
"What? The last time I met her, she blew me up and,..."
"Just like I expected," the woman interrupted.
Diol looked very pitiful, as he whispered his next question.
"Why?"
"I was the leader of a certain cult. Lina Inverse broke my cult apart when she pointed out a very ugly truth," the woman answered.
"Revenge?"
"You could say that. There are other reasons, but I won't go into them right now. Now onto a more important matter, how human will Lina look after you turn her into a chimera? The closer she looks to a human, the better."
Diol scratched his head, as he contemplated the question.
"Rock golems are rough and that's probably why Zelgadis's is that. The pointed ears, blue skin, and purple hair came from the blow demon. An orihalcum golem is smooth and shiny. I'm not sure what the blood is from. So,..."
"Skin like gemstones."
"I should be able to make it so Lina will be shiny and her hair will glisten like gems. Other than that, she should look human," Diol said after a moment. "Maybe this will be the ultimate chimera."
"Good. Very good. I transported your lab here. Get it prepared. As soon as we have Lina, I want her changed. You will be well paid for your services."
Diol nodded and left. The woman went over to a bookshelf and pulled down a tome.
"Worthless, but hopefully not for long. Diol is obssessed with creating the ultimate chimera. He'll come though for me."
The woman put the book back and picked up an article of red and yellow clothing with white trim. In another world, it would be called a legless leotard.
"This will be appropriate for Lina after Diol is done."
