Akane knew she was a formidable fighter, and that while her group 'Red Haze' was ranked 83rd - she herself was in the top ten.
Her initial attack was just to "test the waters" and determine if there really would be a challenge here.
This strange boy avoided her attack, flowing like water around her passage - with his hands still in his pockets and looking completely at ease.
Akane grinned in the manner of a wolf. The earlier display of skill had not been luck then. She could go full out.
The members of 'Red Haze' and Ranma's group both watched the fight going on.
After six blows were avoided by Ranma (two of whom had left craters in the pavement, one having cracked a brick wall during a period Akane had apparently "cornered" her prey), he finally took his hands out of his pockets.
"Here it comes," said Yuka, watching intently.
Akane flexed her wrist in a jerking motion, triggering a spring loaded dagger to extend her reach as she tried a slashing attack.
Ranma avoided it somehow, extending his dodge so that his nose was cleared by millimeters by the blade.
"Now he'll be serious," said Kaede, drawing a few looks from the 'Red Haze' group.
Ranma coiled in on himself briefly, as if his overextension caused him to become unbalanced. Akane pursued what she perceived as an opening.
One leg lashed out at the knife-hand with a vicious-sounding crack, the other sweeping out in a simultaneous chin kick that caused Akane to face the sky. Ranma completed the roll, bunched up, and leapt towards Akane where his fist slammed into her stomach.
The 'Red Haze' group gawked.
"She's still standing," said Konoka, sounding a little impressed.
Akane felt as if her insides had just attained the consistency of jello. She hurt in several places, but was also elated.
First off, this WAS a skilled fighter as she had hoped. She wouldn't fall for that manuever again, she'd remember that trick though she didn't think she was limber enough to pull it off herself. She also knew that she was good enough that he'd had to take her seriously.
Then the rising tide of darkness mercifully swept away the pain.
"Keep in mind," Ranma said to the others as they headed for the dormitories, "apparently hidden weapons and such are okay."
"She said she was on guard duty," said Kaede. "So they use the school's gangs to patrol the schoolgrounds and discourage outsiders?"
"They probably count on the rivalry of the gangs to keep each other in line," said Setsuna, her hand never leaving the hilt of her sword as she watched for ambushes and the like.
Ranma stopped, looking down at the path, then deliberately walked around a patch of paving stones. Konoka looked puzzled briefly but when Kaede and Setsuna did the same she followed their example.
"Man, Oyaji would love this place," said Ranma.
