"You seem a bit more solid than Aya," said Ranma, rubbing at the most recent bruise.
"I'm a little surprised you can see me at all," said Sayo.
"I think it's Aya," said Ranma after a little thought. "She was always sensitive to stuff. Not that it did her much good against That One."
"Hardly anyone was, boy," said an unfamiliar voice.
"EEEK!" said Sayo, diving into Ranma and hiding.
"EEK!" seconded Ranma, who wasn't used to things like that happening.
"You must be more formidable than you look," said the little girl perched on a streetlamp.
"You're not that goo-gal either," said Ranma, not particularly relaxed.
A head poked out of his chest. "I recognize you. You were in class 2-A with the others."
"Evangeline A.K. McDowell," said the little girl. "You and I, we're neither dead nor alive - and therefore we fell outside what is typically considered human."
Ranma considered what Aya's "little voice" was telling him now that he knew he could listen to it. Sayo was not scary. There was something about this girl in the black clothing that WAS scary.
"This is my associate, Chachamaru," said Evangeline. "We're looking for answers."
Ranma straightened up, noticed Sayo was still attempting to hide inside him, and cleared his throat. He waited until Sayo was out and bowing in apology before he spoke. "I'm Ranma Saotome of the Saotome School of Martial Arts."
