Inside, however, it had looked fairly modern for Tokyo circa 1910.
"Dump," repeated Kaede as they entered.
Ranma was forced to agree. "Why's it look as if the place ain't been spendin' money on repairs?"
"Because it hasn't," said an old voice. "There's just me as the caretaker, and Joan House has a budget that hasn't increased of late. The tenants usually transfer out as soon as other lodgings can be arranged."
Ranma, Kaede, and Setsuna all appraised the old man. A fighter with strong chi, though long past his prime.
"Sorry about that," said Ranma. As Kaede was his retainer, his the responsibility to apologize. "Kaede didn't mean anything by it."
"It was an honest opinion," said the old man. "You are Ranma Saotome?"
"Yes," said Ranma.
"My name is Oogami," said the old man. "This place has not done well over the decades, but it is sufficient for now. I shall show you to your rooms."
Kaede's eyes tracked around, noting secret passages and traps. The floorboards creaking might have been deliberate, all things considered.
"Huh, many neighbors?" asked Ranma.
"Right now, no," said Oogami, leading them upstairs. "There may be others later. Transfer and foreign students most often end up here. The principal this House is meant to embody has not been fashionable in this area for some time. Will the young lord be sharing a room with his fiancee?"
"The arrangement has not been finalized," said Setsuna, her voice strongly disapproving. "Nor will ojousama indulge in some improper arrangement."
"In modern times, it would seem less improper than it might have in my day," said Oogami, nodding towards the bodyguard. "I meant no disrespect. We have two rooms with three bunk beds each set aside. However you wish to arrange it."
