A man in a suit came by after a few minutes, sitting down and unfolding his newspaper to apparently scan its contents. "You wanted a meeting?"
"Yes indeed," murmurred the pirate captain.
"Since the usual payments and deals are in place," said the man reading his newspaper, "there are only two reasons I can see for such, especially with such unseemly haste. The first being that you dispute the amounts given."
"No, I can see why you would list the ship as 'scrap' and the rest of the payments were adequate," admitted Magno.
"That means there was a complication," said the newspaper-reader. "We dislike complications."
"Some time ago, one of my crew members was apparently killed," said Magno. "Lost at sea during combat, or more likely - captured by the authorities when they had unexpectedly arrived. An occupational hazard, to be sure. Yet we recently learned that her death was not the case, and the crew member is alive."
"Ah," said the contact. "You want information regarding this crew member."
"Exactly," said Vivian Magno. "It is not our policy to leave members behind."
"Name?" asked the contact, apparently engrossed in the Sports section.
"Dita Leibely," said Magno. "Age 16, reddish brown hair, 5'2", 102 pounds, blue eyes."
"I'll see what I can turn up, and I'll put the bill on your account," said the contact.
"Good enough," said Magno, getting up and stretching.
"What's this 'VanGuard' technique, anyway?" asked Dita, slicing vegetables up to put into the stewpot.
"As the name suggests, it's a defensive technique," said Genma. "More than that, I've only rumors about how the person using it roots themself to the ground and cannot be moved. They become like an iron statue and can withstand some of the most powerful of attacks."
"Oh," said Dita, thinking that sounded odd. "Hope that doesn't mean you'll rust."
"Not 'turn into' an iron statue," said Genma. "'Like' an iron statue. I was able to determine the technique is apparently real and they practice it here, so hopefully I can learn more of it tomorrow when Ranma challenges one of the novices."
