And the authorities shook their heads at the inevitable people who went past their cordons and climbed over fences and otherwise did very stupid things because some people insisted on doing stupid things. This too was spelled out in the contract, and the government wouldn't retaliate against those disappearances. For now, at least.
Ranma was a little boy but the entire village (or close to it) had gathered around to observe his arrival anyway.
At the end of the human-lined trail was something that looked rather like one of the shapes he'd seen bounding through this mists on one occasion, however this one appeared to be human.
Ranma's hand moved up, catching a dart that had been aimed at his head. He examined it, determining that it was not magical nor rigged to explode. Brass dart with a pointy tip. He gripped it with two fingers at the fletching and his thumb just below the point, bending it in half and letting the thing drop. Probably a test of some kind, he figured.
"You're the boss here?" asked Ranma.
"I am Cologne of the Nichieju. My great-granddaughter will show you to your room."
Usagi climbed slowly up, only having tripped twice so far.
"Clumsy," said Rei, shaking her head. "Well, come on, hurry up. You're almost there."
"meanie," mumbled Usagi, staggering under the load of suitcases.
"What was that?" asked Rei.
"I have to carry all these suitcases," said Usagi, dropping roughly half of them.
"How is that MY fault?" asked Rei. "I'm carrying MY stuff."
"but this is YOUR shrine, all your stuff is already here," said Usagi.
"I repeat - how is that MY fault?" said Rei, skipping ahead of Usagi.
"meanie meanie meanie," mumbled Usagi, trying to pick up the fallen suitcases without losing her grip on the remainder.
Crash thump clatter bump.
