“That’s why I think we should go up in to the mountains and train,” said Ranma.
“Ranma-sensei! That’s your answer to everything,” Makoto exaggerated. “And it never helps!”
“Oh, it is not,” Ranma denied with a sigh. Then, with more force, “and it does too!”
“Remember when I said my shower was too cold because the flat’s heating system was down,” Makoto pointed out, “you insisted we go up to the mountains and train. Look what happened?”
“Bathing under a cold waterfall made ya appreciate how lucky ya were, Makoto-san,” Ranma pointed back, “and ya loved the natural hot springs afterwards, and it was just a shame about you catching a cold so I had to look after you.”
“Do you remember when I said I loved the taste of mushrooms?” Minako added. “You insisted we go up to the mountains and train.”
“Wild mushrooms taste the best, Mina-chan,” Ranma agreed, “and you almost learned to tell the difference between mushrooms and toadstools before tripping out.”
“Remember that time I said I was feeling too tired from climbing the stairs and wanted to use the elevator, and you took me up to the mountains and train,” Hotaru said.
“Exercise in the fresh air did ya a world of good, Hotaru-chan,” Ranma defended, “and ya haven’t complained any more about the stairs since climbing all the way up that mountain path.”
“Like duh, Ranma-kun,” Hotaru observed. “Once is enough, thank you very much.”
“Oh, oh! I know! Remember that time I said my maths homework was too hard, and you forced me to go up to the mountain and train,” Usagi joined in.
“Huh! What? No, Usa-chan,” Ranma contradicted, “I said ya should ask Ami, as she’s good with that stuff. But ya insisted on following me up to the mountains instead. We worked on your calculus though, and ya got a C minus on the next test.”
“Wait, wait. Pause, rewind, replay!” Ami sputtered. “You helped Usagi with calculus?”
“Hey, it was just ballistic velocity calculations, Ami-san,” Ranma said defensively, “nothing that hard to explain with a few visual aides. Besides, if I want to be a great martial artist I have ta know these things.”
“Yes, but you, Usagi, calculus, and help, in the same sentance! What’s next; you teaching Minako unmangled Japanese?”
“Hey, I resemble that remark!” Minako protested.
“Do you deny it?” Ami asked.
“Well, no,” Minako huffed, “but I do reassemble it!”.
“Guys, we’re getting off topic!” Rei reminded them. “Society collapsing, monsters arising, new magic to learn, and big bad stuff happening. Focus!”
“Right, Rei-san,” agreed Ranma firmly. “That’s why I think we should go up in to the mountains and train!”
“And why do you think that’s a good idea right now?”
“Well, for a start, ya all can learn to live off the land,” Ranma said. “Look, think of the worst blackout ye’ve been through. Now, think of it lasting for … the rest … of … yer … life!”
He let that sink in.
“Got it? No electric stove, no electric heater, no electric anything! No cars to run to the shops, no trucks to bring things to the shops, and not even ships to bring things to the docks! No trains, no cars, no telephone, not a single luxury! It’ll be as primative as primative can be.”
“Running away won’t help,” Usagi protested.
“Running away, thinking things through, and coming back with a plan will,” Ranma countered. “That’s were the training part comes in. We gotta get a handle on this new magic so we can help people. And we gotta do it quick-like, so we need privacy ta train hard, ya know.”
“You’ve thought this through,” Ami accused.
“Yes, I h—hey! There’s no need to sound quite so surprised,” Ranma protested. “If I’m going to be a great martial artist one day, I’ve got to know strategy.”
