“Now is the time for all good Misties to stand up and be counted,” Nanako ordered, then pointed at each in turn. “One. Too many. Pull yourself together, young lady!”
“We’re running out of time,” the Misties told each other agreeably for once. “We’re feeling a little faint. Besides, this way we’ll prove that I’m the real me. Unless this is just a trick for you to take me over.” Well, mainly agreeably.
As they paused to consider that, Nanako quickly put a hand over one of their mouths.
“Point. If one of us Possesses the other,” the other Misty began doubtfully.
“… who would know the difference?” the former Misty continued when Nanako released her mouth. “And I have to wonder…”
“… what good will Channeling my double do?” the latter Misty finished.
“I don’t have a clue,” Nanako answered merrily. “But at least we’ve got you finishing each others sentences instead of talking at the same time. I guess that’s progress!”
“Alright, exactly what do we have to do?” they asked simultaneously.
“One step forward, two steps back,” Nanako muttered. She inhaled a deep breath and released it in a heavy sigh. Brock would have delighted. “Fine. Now, as the Professor explained it to me, magic is, like, really hard. It’s got all these complicated rituals, esoteric formula, and really tough stuff. You make one mistake and bad things can happen.”
She paused, walked over to a bench, picked up a microphone, tapped it one, two, three, then repeated, “bad things can happen,” with reverb.
“We get the picture,” Misties replied. “Is that what happened to us?”
“No. Having a Spirit Animal imprinted on your aura guides you passed all that jazz,” Nanako replied. “It makes magic simple as running a program. Just execute a command and let the system do all the work.”
“What command?” they asked, sarcastically. “Possess dot exe?”
“Whatever works,” Nanako shrugged. “Usually the first step is to decide on a name for your Spirit Animal. Naming it is very important.”
“Well, I’m Misty. You can be – will you stop that!?”
“Maybe that’s your problem,” Nanako theorised brightly. “Until one of you accepts that she’s the clone, you’re not going to be able get anything done.”
“So how do we prove to her I’m the real me?” the Misties demanded.
“By Possessing the Spirit Animal,” Nanako replied. “Oh, that’s a real catch twenty two, isn’t it?”
Misties shuddered a wave of fatigue ran through them. “That’s easy,” they declared. “Look, we both want this to work. This will sort thing out. Two Misties enter, one Misty leaves. The other can be… uh… Misato? Meiou? Red? Duplicia? Ranko? Whatever. We’ll figure out names latter.”
They stood up, grasped each other’s hand and looked the other in the eye. “Spirit Animal Merge!” they cried and pulled themselves together.
