Or he could have just unconsciously stopped at a point where he had just gotten a hold of himself and started thinking again.
By his own reckoning, he wasn't exactly sure just why he was at the front gate of a shrine, but then he hadn't stopped to plan this out. Instead, the place just stood open right there in front of him, looking as empty as any other place around. However, it wasn't quite the same as the other complexes in the area, given that this was a holy place. And in a time where it seemed that something really supernatural was happening, he figured that his best bet was to go someplace where he might find a moment of peace, at the very least. Plus, at a time like this, it just seemed right to pay his respects.
As he nodded to himself over his decision to enter, he recognized his own wish for something to be there. It didn't matter what would be there, but if he could get some answers at the very least, it'd be helpful. Had heaven been involved, a place like this would know, and even if it didn't have a spirit or something similar that could answer his questions, it could have some sort of holy object that could help him fight off that 'Angel of Death', since he wasn't all that keen on sharing the fate of all those other people.
Using a weapon might not be a perfect way of fighting, but there wasn't exactly a positively unbeatable form of combat at all. Should using a weapon be a viable option for him, he didn't mind using it. Besides, in this case, he also wasn't all that hot on touching something that was entirely likely to turn him into the consistency of pudding if he came into contact with it.
