Hibiki's head whipped about to face his commander. "You want to talk to them?"
"That is the general idea. Unless the rules of Starfleet have suddenly changed when I wasn't looking."
"Well...."
"I do think that 'negotiation' is part of our mission too," the captain pointed out.
"Yes, sir..."
"Good. Now that's settled, let's wait for our guests to arrive, shall we?"
"Sure you want to do that, Jim?" Doctor McCoy asked, sending his friend a questioning look.
"Are you concerned about the approaching vessel, Doctor?" Spock asked.
"Why would ask something like that?"
The Vulcan stayed unfazed, as usual, as he responded. "The question seemed to indicate concern, despite the illogic of any worry as to the threat potential of that vessel."
"Oh, I am concerned. But not about our coming company... exactly."
"Then what is the issue?"
"Simple. What do we do to pass the time until they get here?"
For a long moment, the people on the bridge looked at each other, and seemed to be a bit lost as to what to say. It wasn't exactly a situation that one went through every day, given that their ships were usually able to come into contact with any other vessel rather quickly. Instead, this ship was rather slow, and they were stuck sitting there with nothing to do.
"Perhaps we should prepare ourselves for that one girl to attack," Bones drawled, his tone full of mockery.
Scotty gave off an amused little chuckle. "Doctor, those wee little missles aren't gonna give our shields any trouble whatsoever."
"But she'll still be trouble if we meet face to face."
"Think of it this way, Bones," the captain idly commented, unable to fully keep from smirking at his friend. "You'll get experience to help you with your wife."
"Gee, thanks. Maybe you'll get to be a marriage counselor when you retire."
"Anything to help."
The doctor merely rolled his eyes and pointed his face upwards as he slowly shook his head.
"In the mean time, let's come up with some options for when they arrive. I'd sort of prefer to not shoot ducks in a barrel, if I can avoid it."
"That is perfectly logical, Captain. However, there is one problem that I can ascertain with it," Spock commented, looking levelly at the ship's ranking officer.
"And that is...."
"There is not much more that we can do. As Mister Scott pointed out earlier, their technology is not a threat to us. So, logically speaking, we should be safe with our current status."
"Oh well.... Anyone have a deck of cards?"
"I don't," Uhura murmured, a small smile curving her lips. "But perhaps we could find out more about what Mister Hibiki was doing on that ship for all that time."
If he could have sunk down to the floor, Ryoga likely would have, but he had to settle for slouching in his seat.
"Looks like it might be interesting...."
"You might call it that," the young officer in the bandana grumbled, sounding rather put upon as he spoke.
"It might be a help to us," the captain allowed.
"Sir...."
"Hibiki, our ship is about to meet a pretty disjointed group of pirate women, some of whom don't particularly like us, and one of whom really likes you. I'd prefer to have the truth, if you don't mind."
"Understood...."
Kirk leaned back in his chair, and gave his 'new' officer a bland look, but he found himself rather interested in the situation. Given that his ship had just been attacked by a group of girls with rather bizarre notions, he wasn't too sure as to what to make of all of it. As it was, he had a bunch of romantic entanglements going on, and he was having all sorts of rather strange encounters. He didn't know what was going to come next, but for now, he was willing to wait, while:
