WHPG, The Return: Hello Kitty [Episode 191659]

by S/Rohm

Akane Tendo was returning from her after-school jog when she first noticed the cat.

It was a small black cat, not anything too unusual to see on the streets of the neighborhood, but this one was sitting just outside the gates of her family’s dojo.

Even more curious, it was giving the dojo’s sign its complete attention, almost as if reading it.

“Hello, little kitty,” she said with a smile as she opened the gate. “Would you like a saucer of milk?”

“Actually, I’m hoping Soun Tendo is in,” the cat replied. “Might I have a word with him?”

Akane stared slack jawed in shock. The cat took advantage of this and slipped through the gate on its way to the house.

Akane pretended to watch television, but all of her attention was focused on the scraps of conversation she could catch from the next room. Her father and the strange (obviously magical, given the talking and the bright yellow crescent moon marking its forehead) cat had been in there for nearly an hour.

From what she had overheard, it seemed her father actually knew the cat. Akane frowned. Father had never mentioned knowing any magical mascots. Why would he not tell his own daughters such exciting news? Unless… he had promised to keep it a secret! Oh my. What other top secret adventures might he have had? Perhaps he…

Akane forcibly jerked her attention back to the subject at hand. Anyway, it seemed something had gone wrong and now the cat needed her father’s help! There had definitely been something said about a rescue.

Of course father was much too old to run off on any new adventures. She was sure she had heard him say something about picking one of his daughters. That could only mean (dare she hope?) the cat was looking for a new magical girl! Or at least a sidekick for its current one!

Akane was grinning madly when her father opened the door and called out to her.

“Akane! Go get your sisters. We must have a family meeting immediately!”

Elsewhere in Nerima, crowds quickly parted as a large winged lion strode purposefully down the street, leading a small group of people. Every once in a while it would stop and sniff the pavement before continuing on.

“Dang it! Why didn’t the old man wait?” Ranma asked rhetorically.

“Or at least give us an address,” remarked Rain, glancing around nervously at the crowds of people. Her pack-sisters did much the same, except for Usagi who flitted about in delighted fascination.

It was only their second day in the city, and the girls were still trying to get used to the large numbers of humans surrounding them. Even the largest post-Sukebe War cities didn’t come close to the metropolis that was Tokyo. Much to their relief, this Nerima district looked to be a bit less crowded.

Ranma suppressed a sigh. His old man was up to something. When Ranma had asked him yesterday where his mother lived, Genma had been extremely evasive. Eventually he agreed to lead them to her house, but claimed it was too late to start out until the next morning. And then, this morning, he had taken advantage of Ranma’s morning taming time and left a message with Rei before disappearing. All he said was that he needed time to explain things, and that he would return for Ranma once everything was ready.

Ranma didn’t need Nabiki’s skeptical comments to smell a rat. Genma was definitely up to one of his old tricks.

So the group packed up and were now following Genma’s scent. Sooner or later they would catch up with the old man.
