Setsuna's Ninja Village: Destiny? Hinata's Heart [Episode 193496]

by Kestral

Hinata Hyuga was NOT Kodachi Kuno, for all that the 'slot' in this world was the one that might have been filled by Kodachi in another world.

The Hyuga family was one of several leading families of ninja in the Village Hidden In The City, which was one of the three surviving-to-modern-times Japanese ninja villages. The Hyuga family specialized in the Byakugan technique, the "White Eye" (though it looked lavender to others) and was a kekkei genkai (bloodline heritage ability) only occurring within the Hyuga family. It combined a nearly 360o degree of vision with some degree of telescopic and x-ray vision with that. They could see chakra flows and heat levels.

It was the Hyuga clan that had become wealthy as gamblers using Byakugan among other things.

They were best utilized as spy-ninja, despite their combat abilities using chakra points to attack an opponent's internal organs.

Hinata Hyuga was nearly useless as a combatant. She was nearly invisible to others, being quiet and gentle and tending to eschew any sort of spotlight. She was familiar with a number of poisons and antidotes, but that was mainly because she viewed herself more as a healer than a fighter. One of the reasons for this was her high degree of empathy.

The boy following her was both known and unknown to her. She could see the vast well of loneliness within him. She could see the strength he had, his stubborness, and she could see that within him were two things. One was actually alien to him, something he had gained years ago but that was now largely a part of him too. The other was his own nature.

She could also see he had a buff martial artist body and a slender but tautly muscled form that set off reactions within her that were less to do with the Byakugan and more to do with her being a teenaged girl.

No, Hinata Hyuga was not Kodachi Kuno.

"Hey, what's yer name, anyway?" asked Ranma, trying to be polite.

"Hinata. Hinata Hyuga," automatically answered Hinata before her conscious mind could add appropriate stutters and bashfulness.

"I'm Ranma. Ranma Saotome," said the boy. "Sorry about all this."

"Oh no, my brother gets attacked regularly," dismissed Hinata.

She didn't particularly want to find him. Nor to get married. Still, it was intriguing on a purely professional level.

She was Setsuna Tendo. Her ninja skill was 'perfect timing' - which was not terribly descriptive. What it actually was involved a peculiar ninja technique that allowed her to see probability lines. Not as flashy as the Sharingen nor as overall useful as the Byakugan, but a trick that as far as she knew was peculiar to herself.

She therefore didn't bother looking for Ranma. She examined the various probabilities and foresaw no chance of success.

Since looking for Ranma was not going to be successful, that meant she could foresee herself sitting down and having a really good cup of tea.

Some probabilities were, after all, better to pursue than others.

Michiru Tendo was a genjutsu expert. When she played her violin, she could set up an illusion technique to ensnare all that listened. Mostly she played because she really liked playing and was very talented at it. People enjoyed listening to her music, and she didn't have any problem at all NOT using her genjutsu technique of Illusion Threnody.

That was not to say that her technique didn't have drawbacks or that she didn't learn other techniques to cover that, but it WAS her specialty and she spent most of her time and energy working on it. That meant, as with everyone else, that she wasn't as polished and perfect at everything else.

So she used the typical kunai and shuriken, though she preferred using throwing-needles or senbon as weapons.

There was one other technique she was good at, which involved using a mirror to look at someone she was well acquainted with. She'd only met Ranma briefly, and an attempt to use the mirror had brought up Neji Hyuga instead of Ranma. Who had apparently been using his Byakugan as a peeping tool again and gotten a heaping of feminine vengeance as a result.

Honestly, ever since he'd apparently seen her and Haruka getting reacquainted after long separate missions - he'd been quite the pervert.

Sakura Tendo grumped and grumbled and made a half-hearted attempt to find Ranma.

She didn't need a fiancee, thank you very much. Not when Sasuke (long heartfelt sigh) was available.

She was a good all-around ninja with a variety of skills and knowledge of techniques. She knew the area, whereas if Ranma did his knowledge would be nearly a decade out-of-date. Some uneducated wandering taijutsu specialist hardly posed a challenge.

Though apparently he was fairly good at hiding because she didn't seem to be able to find him. It was inevitable though. She'd find him and drag his sorry butt back to the house, and get this over with. Maybe he could end up with Setsuna, she was the oldest and therefore the duty should fall to her - right?

Hotaru got out her stepstool and fixed dinner.

She wasn't looking for Ranma. She didn't have enough talent or training to be able to track down someone.

As to how she felt about the whole thing - well, she knew she wouldn't be chosen. After all, look at her sisters!

Sakura was so energetic. Michiru was poised and elegant, a talented musician. Setsuna was also elegant, though in a different manner and far more mysterious.

No, she definitely wouldn't be chosen. On the other hand, maybe they could be friends?
