Radio attempts were met with silence. Arguments and violence (some emotional and intellectual, others went for old fashioned physical) erupted among the Earth-natives as to what all this meant. Not to mention what other means of contact might by feasible.
The United States was in favor of using low-energy laser signals. That was forbidden in the United Nations. The European Union voted for a wait-and-see attitude.
There were thirteen of the big ships. When objects dropped from the ship, after the third day in orbit, there was increased speculation and panic regarding those objects. Each of these secondary objects being about the size of a football field.
The first landings took place in the United States. Boston. New Jersey. San Francisco. Seattle. Washington DC. The polyhedral vehicles landed with no communications still being given. Each landed in a large park. This last was seen by many as a peaceful gesture.
TV crews had been set up within minutes. Crowds formed. Vendors appeared, hawking everything from overpriced bottled water to "Welcome To Earth" T-shirts.
On February 7, 1990 at 15:57 eastern standard time, the lowest edges of the landers opened. The crowds and newscrews all leaned forward, eager to get a glimpse of the visitors.
The peaceful atmosphere lasted only a few minutes before the first of the aliens moved tentatively towards one of the small humans at the barricade. In a sudden burst of speed, it was not only at the barricade, but scooping up the child and biting her in half.
At which point what seemed to be hundreds of the aliens all moved to partake of the feast before them.
Sailor Pluto wanted to hang her head in disgust at some of the images following.
Instead though, she focussed on one.
