The captain certainly was surprised when he saw the red-scaled, human-sized dinosaur standing in front of him. Then he grinned and said: "Why, what a surprise! Where in the world did you come from?"
"Uh, from back home!" Guilmon replied and pointed his claw back at the city.
Jack seemed relieved. "Ah, and I was afraid I would have landed on a desolate island."
"An island?" Guilmon wondered.
"Aye," Jack nodded. "I hate being stranded on desolate islands. There's always this lack of pleasurable company, the merry people, you know what I mean?"
Guilmon shook his head. "I don't think we're living on an island..." he said hesitantly. "At least I don't think so..."
"Yes, yes, it is!" Jack nodded. "It is an island, and I have discovered it. I will have to name it... what do you think I call it 'Sparrow Island'?"
He stood up from the ground and looked around, as if he wanted to take a closer look at his new island. "I'm gonna give you a nice name as well," he added. "Let me think about it..."
But Guilmon assured him that he already had a nice name.
Jack was surprised. "But how? I just discovered you. How can you already have a name?"
He rubbed his chin and murmured: "Very, very strange indeed... this island is full of mysteries."
"What do you mean, you discovered me?" Guilmon asked. The idea seemed a bit strange to his ears.
"That means I have discovered you and your island," Jack said casually. "And that therefore, this island now belongs to me. It's common practice, you know? I am the discoverer. And you are a native and have to treat me in a polite and obliging manner."
He hesitated for a while, then he asked: "What do you say we have a little snack?"
"Oh yes, I already thought of that," Guilmon agreed.
Jack's bag looked like they were stuffed to the brim, and Guilmon wondered what was inside.
"I was thinking about a seafood soup as a starter," Jack suggested.
"And maybe a bit of bread," Guilmon added. He liked the captain more and more.
"And as the main course, we can have a nice piece of roasted pork," Jack said. "Together with a nice bottle of rum, of course!"
Guilmon nodded and added: "And maybe some ice cream afterwards?"
Jack nodded with a smile. "I see we'll get along nicely, my boy!"
For a little while, neither of them said anything, and they looked at each other expectantly. Finally, Jack asked: "Well, what about the food?"
Guilmon looked into his bag. "It's empty..." he whined and his ears drooped. "No bread and nothing!"
"Too bad, too bad!" Jack sighed. "All of my provisions have sunk with the ship. I couldn't save anything!"
Guilmon was appalled. "Did you have lots of food?"
"Aye, the ship's whole hold was full of barrels and crates with food."
"Oh no!" Guilmon groaned. Finally, he took a deep breath and asked: "What ship?"
"The ship that brought me to this island," Jack explained. "Across the great waters!" And his hand gestured at the tiny river that was flowing nearby.
"But... no ships could ever sail on that river," Guilmon argued. "It's too small!"
Jack nodded. "True, that's the reason why it was smashed. Into thousands of tiny splinter, I'm telling you. And I'm the only one who was able to save himself..."
"There were other people on that ship?" Guilmon asked curiously.
The captain thought about it. "No, I don't think so. At least I never noticed anyone else besides me."
"Kinda strange," Guilmon murmured. "That you didn't even notice if you were the only one on your ship..."
"That's not strange at all," Jack objected. "I was way too thirsty and too hungry to think about it."
That was something Guilmon could understand very well.
"But as far as I remember, I was alone on the ship," Jack said.
"Alone with all the food..." Guilmon sighed.
Jack nodded. "Aye, and I really miss it. After a long day of work, you could use a nice meal and a bottle of rum."
"What did you do?" Guilmon asked.
"Oh, I thought about the mystery of the lost items," Jack said boastfully.
"What do you mean?" Guilmon wondered.
"Well, it's strange, isn't it? Why do certain things vanish and reappear after some time?"
"Does that really happen?" Guilmon asked in awe.
"Of course. Today, I almost stumbled over my old hat, which I had lost weeks ago. Now it decided to show up again, here on this meadow. Isn't that strange? I tried stuffing it into my pockets, but it just won't stay inside."
"I'm not surprised they don't stay inside your pockets," Guilmon pointed out. "They must have fallen out, your pockets are too full."
Jack shook his head. "Nonsense! For one, I put it at the bottom. Besides, finding a solution is always simple if you don't think about it."
He remained silent for a while, until Guilmon suggested: "If you are hungry, we should go to Takatomon and Ami. Maybe they can give you something to eat."
"Who is Takatomon?" Jack asked curiously. "And who is Ami?"
"My friends," Guilmon explained.
"Ah, natives," Jack nodded. "Okay, why not? Lead the way!"
This evening, Guilmon was sitting in Takato's room, together with Tails. Ami felt sorry for the captain (who she believed to be just a poor, if slightly whimsical, bum from the street) and allowed him to stay in her apartment for a while.
"He discovered me, Tails," Guilmon said excitedly. "Captain Jack said he discovered me, isn't that great?"
Tails was a young, humanoid fox with two tails. It was his biggest dream to be a great inventor and discoverer. "Do you think I might discover something some day?" he asked the Digimon Rookie.
"Why not?" Guilmon shrugged. "It doesn't seem to be too difficult."
But Tails was still musing. "Let's say I meet someone... how can I tell if I discovered him or just met him?"
The two friends were at a loss.
Tails sighed while he twirled his two tails around. "There has to be a secret to it if you want to become a discoverer..." he murmured.
