"Can I ask a question?" Nixma asked sitting on a long gem table kicking her legs as she sides glanced at Zexion.
"You can, but weather I answer, always depends on the question." Zexion said, his face never leaving the book this time, going over names and names of people who were possible recruits or targets. They were alone, Kurix had gone on to give Xiyu a basic tour of the place and how to command the lesser nobodies.
"How can we act as we do?" Nixma asked plainly.
Zexion went straight into a thesis. "Without human emotions tempering animal instincts and cold logic-"
"That isn't what I meant."
"Then what did you mean?"
" . . . you told me how you and your team mates used to use heartless on different worlds, watch them devour hearts and shift through the left overs but... was it always so easy? I mean, just let the animals do their thing and watch the melodrama?"
"Sunnydale Syndrome."
"Huh?"
"A popular culture term referring to the fact people will ignore or subconsciously suppress any direct information that contradicts the fundamental state of creation that they used to properly interpret the world around them."
"Huh?" Nixma asked again, Zexion had a habit of going over her head.
"People turn a blind eye to anything that makes them question reality as they define it. This is GREATLY enhanced by the fact that on worlds where protectors of ordinary humans exist, baring the worlds inhabited by mutants and enhanced humans of course, these protectors go to incredible lengths to ensure they are not made public, nor that the beasts they fight are made public either."
"That's stupid."
"Their logic is that as long as people remain ignorant of things that can murder them that they don't already know about, they can continue their happy, short, productive little lives in peace."
"Geez. That IS stupid. Even sheep know about wolves."
"Whatever the case, it was, and is, perfectly profitable to us, enabling us to our work without even having to BOTHER to maintain our shroud of secrets, the shadowy protectors of those worlds do it FOR US! Normally we have to burn a good deal of resources to keep people guessing there's anything under our robes, or weather there's one or a hundred of us, but these groups, to keep the population they protect ignorant and happy, do this job for us, creating cover story after cover story to explain away when people see us, the heartless, or our hillbilly cousins at work."
"Sounds like you enjoy those kinds of places."
"Makes things easier, yet at the same time, more complex, the endless lies and illusions and the resources burned to maintain them. While I still had it, such peoples would be after my own heart. Knights Templar, CIA, FBI, SERVICE, Soul Reapers, Men In Black, The Veil of Shifters, all the same in one way or another."
"Like you."
"Like me."
