“Your name is Naruto Uzumaki?”
Seconds after opening his eyes, Naruto realized he was blindfolded. The commanding voice came from somewhere in front of him. In addition, his limbs were bound by tight ropes, and he had the unmistakable feeling of a cold knife was up against his neck.
“You will answer the questions truthfully. If you choose not to speak truthfully, you will be killed and left for the rats. If you speak truthfully but we do not like your answers, you will be met with similar results. I will repeat the question: your name is Naruto Uzumaki?”
‘Ah,’ realized Naruto, ‘an interrogation.’ “Yes,” he answered.
“You are a ninja of Konoha?”
“Yes.”
“We were under the impression that all the ninja of Konoha were among the Emperor’s thrall. Explain how you were to slip through his fingers.”
Naruto grimaced slightly. “I…was in the hospital when the village went to war with him. I wasn’t part of the assault.”
There was a short pause. Naruto could hear people whispering around him. When the voice spoke again, “One last question…are you the same Naruto Uzumaki as the one that serves as the container for the Nine-Tailed Fox?”
“Y…yes.”
Silence. “No irregular changes in heartbeat,” said a voice, “he’s clean.”
Before Naruto could blink, the blindfold and ropes had been removed, and the knife was replaced by a reassuring pat on the back. “Congrats, Uzumaki. Welcome to the resistence.”
The speaker, who Naruto recognized as his interrogator, was a Sand ninja with a piece of cloth covering half of his face. “You’ll forgive us for the theatrics, but the nature of our foe makes it difficult to trust anyone these days. My name is Baki…I’m from Suna. My student Temari brought you here. You’ll meet with her and the rest of the resistence later.”
Naruto looked around. They were in a rather cramped room overfilled with ninja. All were from various countries, with the vast majority from Sand and Sound. The fact that there were none from Konoha discouraged him slightly.
Turning back to Baki, Naruto exclaimed, “Hey! I know you! You’re Gaara’s sensei! How’s he doing these days?”
Baki looked at Naruto awkwardly.
“Gaara…has been missing in action for the past two months. I suggest you don’t talk about it…morale’s at a low point as it is.”
Indeed, several ninja in the room were staring at the floor or away from Naruto. “Come on,” Baki gestured, “I’ll show you to the living quarters…you can meet up with the other kids there.”
Baki stepped out the back door. Naruto, a little downcast after learning about Gaara, followed him.
