The world lay in ruins. The sea of LCL, the minds and bodies of humanity stripped of their individuality and AT fields and trapped in an endless moment of insanity, lapped at the shores of the Earth. The only signs of life beyond that horrific puddle were two teenagers, one of each gender. The unavoidable Adam and Eve comparison became less so when one realized that she was comatose and he was too timid to try anything regardless.
“Hamlet and Ophelia at the End of Days,” mused the figure that hung over this scene. It was not whatever ineffable Authority that had sent the Angels to retrieve their comrade, held captive by the Lilim who looked on Asuka and Shinji. The observer had come in an attempt to prevent that which it now beheld: Third Impact in all its bleak, viscous glory; the vast majority of the populous trapped in a stagnant primordial soup with their hopes resting in a vegetable and a wuss. That having only two surviving humans meant insufficient genetic diversity for more than a generation merely added to the dreary hopelessness of the scene.
True, there was a chance that those with sufficient sense of self could, at some point, separate themselves from the LCL and reassert their individuality, but that was uncertain, and even if it was the case, the Earth was not exactly in suitable shape for harboring significant levels of human life at any point in the foreseeable future.
“The worst part,” the figure said to itself, “is that I promised myself I wouldn’t leave until I had guaranteed that this wouldn’t happen.” It sighed. “Wonderful. I have to undo Third Impact. Well, at least I have some options. After all, I am
