“Gather round children of Odaiba, and you shall hear a tale of the past presented here,” spoke a garishly dressed woman whose husband stood to the right of a caravan stage grinding a mid-sized barrel organ.
As she watched the younger children of the village sit down and settle, Mrs. Tachikawa smiled to herself, ‘My family may only get to tell this one for a couple of months in the local villages every four years, but it’s always so much fun.’ “Now children understand long ago, well over a hundred years in fact, the world was a much different place.”
Her husband continued grind the organs crank with his right-hand as he pulled a draw string with his left, and unfurled the curtain to the puppet stage. “Civilizations and countries around the world long shrouded behind veils of mistrust and isolation were beginning to open up unto the world,” The woman continued as stick figures of Asian pagodas and robed men and women were held up by people hidden behind the stage.
“Elsewhere in Europe and the Americas the Great Age of Exploration was rapidly giving way to the rise of an Age of Industry,” Mrs. Tachikawa continued as the hidden stage hands raised puppets of caravels, pioneers, and conquistadors only to replace them with those of factories, businessmen, and miners.”
“The future and what it offered looked bright indeed for those of vision with the passion to make dream reality, still that bright and prosperous future on the horizon was not to be,” the woman hid her eyes as the puppets were again replaced, “In a hidden world that could not be seen by the plain eye, a world where imagination and myth become reality and fact, a darkness spawned from hidden avarice chose to burst through the unknown veil between the two worlds and claim our world as their own.”
“And so they came, seven great evils leading an army of nightmares to overwhelm the world; ancient cities that still stood occupied were transformed into ruins, and new cities dedicated to the future became dust.” The woman read as the still hidden puppeteers helped illustrate the attacks, “However their villainy did not go unnoticed, for back within the hidden world the Four Sovereign were creating an army to come to the defense of mankind; they harnessed the very essence of the eight elements of the physical world, as well as the twin elements of balance, and from them created the Ten Ancient Warriors to lead the assault against the Seven Demon Lords.”
“At first it looked like victory would be assured for the Ancient Warriors and their allies, one by one the Demon Lords fell until only their leader, Lucemon the Demon Lord of Pride, was left; however what the ancient warriors did not know was that Lucemon had secretly absorbed the essence of his comrades as each of them fell, and as he harnessed the power of the other six lords his body shed his past as an angel and revealed his true allegiance to all doubters.”
“Lucemon used his new powers to try and destroy the Ancient Warriors; however he only succeeded in separating each of them in to three pieces, a totem representing their warrior’s spirit, a totem representing their primal beast, and a medallion or digimedal which allowed the two to work in concert. Lucemon thought that was the end of the Warriors, and went back to fighting the resistance and conquering the world.”
“Unknown to Lucemon the digimedals had fallen into the hands of ten human children from our islands, who with guidance from a young Bokomon came together and learned how to harness the powers of the Ancients for themselves. Once together the children reunited the medallions first with the Warrior spirits and later with the Beast spirits.”
“They fought long and hard, and after merging all of the spirits into one being Susanoomon, drove Lucemon back into what we now call the Digital World all the way to the Wall of Fire at its very center. There they defeated the Demon Lord of Pride and took back all the essence he had plundered from his defeated victims and fallen allies, unfortunately since they purified the essence in doing so the pure evil which remained coalesced into a form which displayed the true ugliness found within Lucemon. Still the children did not give up and defeated both the Lucemon and the mindless beast he controlled.”
“Still a problem had remained, although Lucemon and his fellow Demon Lords had been defeated the human world was in ruins and within the Digital World almost all of the great digimon had to await rebirth within Primary Village. The Four Sovereign knowing that due to Lucemon’s actions that the human and the digital world’s fates laid intertwined, and remembering the bravery of ten human children came to a decision that would apply to all digimon yet to be born.”
“All digimon born from that day forth were to be given a digimedal with a break-away circuit-coin, whenever they wanted to they could choose to, they could cast their circuit-coin into one of the Wells of Sending located across the Digital World. Then every four years during the Night of the Winter Solstice DigiGnomes would come from the Digital World, and leave that digimedal under the pillow of that digimon’s partner. After this the partner would have to choose to travel to the nearest Gate Shrine by either of the Vernal or the Autumnal Equinoxes the following year, or else the two would be doomed never to meet and join the two halves of the digimedal to forge their digivice.”
“And I tell you this children because today is the Winter Solstice, and tomorrow morning some of you may wake up to find your partner’s circuit coin under your pillow. So good luck to everyone, and may the spirits of the Legendary Warriors guide your way.” Mrs. Tachibana said taking a bow to the cheers of the younger children in the village, and noting the older ones looking on.
After the children were gone she went behind to the side of the caravan, and opened the door revealing a young girl and two digimon inside carefully putting the assorted stick puppets away in an exact order, “Thanks again you three, once again your performances were flawless.”
“It’s nothing Satoe-san,” replied a Bakumon as he hovered to put a box away on the top shelf, “Anything to help the kids have pleasant dreams as they await the DigiGnomes.”
“It’s no problem partner, we Floramon live to entertain.”
“What about you my little Mimi-chan?”
“Well mom, I have to admit that I feel a little jealous,” Mimi admitted with a slight blush on her face, “To tell you the truth, I can’t wait till it’s my turn to sing and perform as a story teller.”
“Don’t pout Mimi-chan, your time to shine before everyone will come someday meanwhile I have a feeling that a DigiGnome will be bringing you something extra-special tonight.”
“I know mom, I just wonder who my partner will be?”
“Don’t worry my hime-chan; whoever you meet I’m sure you’ll get along like two peas in a pod. Now run along and go play, who knows you just might make some new friends.”
