10 Rings: Lost and Fire [Episode 1977]

by Greyman

The plan had been so simple. They needed to find hosts that were innocent enough to bind the warrior genies and naive enough to manipulate, but were also had a strong enough will and life force to feed on while they hid. Child protegy martial artists neatly fit all these parameters. And young Ryoga Hibiki was the strongest and naivest one Wiseman had found. He promised to be truely powerful when he grew up.

If he survived that long. Wiseman was seriously upset with his tool. All the martial arts children the dark genies had selected as hosts had exploitable flaws - cracks in their code of honor through which the dark ones could worm their way into their hosts souls without destroying their usefulness. But Wiseman hadn't anticipated the boy's utter lack of a sense of direction.

Only one thing had spared the boy. His wanderings had taken him to a shrine where a genie ring lay hidden. Wiseman was able to suggest that the boy practice a new 'secret technique' he'd made up on the spot. They boy had actually beleived that grabbing things out of a fire was a genuine training technique!

Wiseman had to move carefully after that. The Ifreeti of Fire was also a preistess. If she had any indication that her new master was being influenced before she was propperly bound, she had the power to exorcise him. Once she was securely bound, however, he would make good use of her scrying ability to give the boy some proper direction.

A little red haired girl and a little gothic genie crept out of the abandoned lot and headed towards a school yard.

"Shouldn't we tell Pop?" Ranma asked as he followed Saturn.

The little genie sighed. Ranma had an amazing amount of trust in his father even after all he'd been put through - he could forgive any harshness in the name of training. Saturn didn't share his view and felt that, however effective the training was, her master would be much better off without the idiot. However, he was her Master, not the other way around, so she could only suggest and guide.

"Ranma, your father wanted to hand my ring over to that witch. Do you really want him to get his hands on another ring?"

"Oh, I guess not," Ranma admitted sheepishly. He still couldn't quite believe that his father would sell someone like that - at least not without a plan to steal them back.

Hidden in the bushes, Genma snorted with wounded pride. The girl was definitely a bad influence on his son. She was making him think!

"There it is," Saturn pointed to the crowd of students heading into a cafferteria. "Oh, dear."

"I just havta find someone wearing a ring like this, right?" Ranma asked.

"That's right," Saturn said admiringly. He was finally starting to think.

"No problem!" he smirked. "Let's go!"

"But Ranma! It's a boys school!"

"Oh!" he exclaimed with understanding blinked. "Okay, wait here. I'll be right back."

"Wait!" Saturn told the dust cloud. "Ranma you idiot! You've forgotten that you're a girl too." She shock her head fondly. He was sweet and adorable but he was infuriatingly dense.

'While I'm here, I may as well get breakfast,' Ranma's stomach thought for him.

A cry of, "Last curry bread!" set off a stampeed of boys. Ranma used heads as stepping stones to reach her target.

POW!

And so Ranma met Ryoga.
