A Rose at Hogwarts - Third Year: Gossip and Relaxation (Restart Option provided) [Episode 19916]

by Thrythlind

"Disgraceful," the woman said as she walked through the streets of Hogsmeade alongside a friend. "The Ministry of Magic and these..." she looked nervously about for any sign of dementors. "...creatures have brought nothing but trouble this year. Laying about the castle like some besieging army. Crawling about the streets. And they can't even stop Black from entering the castle! Did you hear? This very morning there was some kind of explosion. Children were injured! It's disgraceful it is."

"Dumbledor is perfectly right in wanting them gone," her friend asserted.

Neither of them paid any attention to the large stray dog that huddled in the nearby alleyway. Though he certainly noticed them, and especially their talk of explosions and injuries.

****

One of those injuries, at the moment was sitting in her bed feeling quite...bored. She didn't feel too particularly injured, not after Madame Pomfrey had finished with her, at least, but she was certainly being treated injured.

Really, it was quite irksome. Through most of her life she was expected not to get injured, and if she got injured she was expected not to let it be known that she was. Mother had never been very interested in anything too athletic. The pursuits she did attend to had never really been very physically taxing to see. Kodachi was expected to have the same interests and aptitudes.

Of course, she didn't. Kodachi's gardening went beyond simple growing of plants and straight into breeding her own varieties. Her calligraphy was respectable for a girl of her station, but she did not have either the skill or artistic touch of her mother. Nor did she care to. Kodachi cooked only when she wanted to impress someone, and even then she usually had hired other people to do it.

At any rate. When injured Kodachi found it was more amenable to preventing further injury to pretend that she wasn't injured, at least while her brother was around. Being pampered like this wasn't to her experience.

Kodachi idly wondered what Madam Pomfrey would think of her habitual morning climb out the window, but didn't say anything. Madam Pomfrey struck as having little patience for anyone that she considered to be deliberately "placing themselves in danger."

So she sat in her bed and was reading her potions text through while making notes and trying to work through Snape's assignment. Shirousagi sat coiled nearby, his head lying on her lap. She was scratching the large snake as if it were a cat. Shirousagi was pleasantly hissing at the at attention.

She did look up in confusion, however, when she saw her two friends entering with a box.

"Oh, put down the homework," Melody said. "It's Saturday. Certainly you have to have some time to relax."

"I am relaxing," Kodachi said. "I am under strict orders to relax. I would not possibly dare to do otherwise. What is that?" She pointed to the box they were carrying.

"This is a set of wizard's chess pieces," Karen said enthusiastically. "Did you have wizard's chess in Japan?"

"Is it anything like European chess," Kodachi asked.

"Almost identical," Karen asserted.

"Ah, then yes," Kodachi said. "But I've never played it."

"Well," Melody said, time to teach you.
