Setsuna's Fault - GCS: A Society Of Magic [Episode 202798]

by Kestral

There was a phrase copied on many many bumperstickers which stated that "Well Behaved Women Rarely Make History" - which was a partial truth. One who studied history or even the televised news could quickly make the statement a little more complete in that "Well Behaved People Rarely Make History." Those who were well adjusted, content, sane, and fit in with their society and culture rarely did anything to attract national much less international attention. History was largely a long list of people of both genders who did not play well with others.

Setsuna Meiou knew this. She also knew that those who rose to power and prominence were often just like a nova or other stellar prominence. They might shine briefly for a moment, but were then forgotten despite all their pride or pretensions or plans. A decade or two and so many rock stars or politicians were discarded, the details faded, and a century later would be forgotten with very few exceptions.

Setsuna Meiou was quite familiar with the way such things went. She was familiar with the way that those in power tended to be the most ruthless, the most aggressive, the most likely to do or say whatever was needed to continue to accrue that power.

The overwhelming tendency was for mage couples to produce mage children, non-mage couples produced non-mage children. Mixed parentage could go either way and produce either a weakly powered mage or an exceptionally powerful one.

Those without magic could make their mark in history, just as they had in the previous timelines. Those with magic could settle in for a largely uneventful life and avoid complications and problems. Those who did have the magic simply had more options available to them than those who did not, which was what power ultimately came down to whether that was political or monetary or social power came down to.

So she was looking at a sort of caste society except that it was worldwide. Further, from what she could see, the very kind of magic wielded had its effect on the world's development as a whole.

That sort of magic being:
