Sally McGee stared out at the wind-blasted farm, admiring the hardy wheat that grew despite the chill. Her daughter and son-in-law had made the place grow from almost nothing; while their skill and expertice had done plenty, ultimately it was nature that made the decision. Nearby farmers talked of magic, but the truth was found within the beauty of Clarke’s Third Law.
She only hoped that law could solve a more human problem.
Twenty years ago, while researching in Japan, she’d met a group of friends. They’d helped her out through some problems she’d found, then acted as the perfect hosts, showing her the human side of the country during her stay. She’d talked of her house, of the place that she operated back then, and even considered inviting a couple of the more adventurous of them back to see if they'd enjoy the life.
She should have kept a better eye on them. They’d tried to recreate the magic of Sally’s Place; unfortunately, one of them had twisted it into the very antithesis of her house - a place of slavery, rather than liberation. One had made it out, but at terrible cost; all of the others, however...
She turned back to the front door. “Mary, Mickey, are you ready? Mike’s already there.”
Her daughter smiled, and grabbed the hand of her husband. He was the other reason why the neighbors spoke of magic; Mickey Finn stood nine feet tall, and had skin the color of the Mediterannean. He was also well-nigh invincible, but that didn’t help him farm better.
She smiled. Her family was about healing - whether through the cathartic heart-wrenching found in her husband’s pub or the sexual spiritual repair she’d done at her old brothel. Both were closed now, sacrificed for the future; however, the dream lived on.
And... for that dream, she had to heal the children of those who’d helped her so long ago. Besides, she’d heard wonderful things about Jake’s place in the Keys... that she hadn’t been there before now was a horrible oversight.
She let herself take a step forward - and two thousand miles away - to see if Clarke’s Third Law can be implemented once more.
***
FYI, Clarke's Third Law is as follows:
"Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."
And, considering the Callahan crowd... that gets applied in spades.
