Each Rune depicted something in reality. There were Runebreakers - though these were rare and generally looked at with suspicion. Runebinders who could scribe or fix a Rune to something and thereby give that object some quality of the Rune. Runecasters who could call forth momentary effects of those Runes.
Not everyone knew all Runes. Some were hoarded carefully away. Some were common. Some were lost.
The Saotome line had several Runes that they specialized in, secrets that the clan hid away.
Kenaz was a Rune that the Saotome clan had learned through intermarriage with a European Runebinder two hundred years previously. The Rune Of Enlightenment. Not a secret Rune, but certainly uncommon.
Ranma considered things briefly, three ninja nearby - Hayate and Hayabusa with him and Ayane apparently on the roof of the train. Lords and such apparently had Magic. What kind of magic does Kodachi Kuno have?
The Universe stirred itself. The Kuno family have Invocation magic that they can tap into utilizing runes enscribed on their flesh. The Kuno main Rune is Isa Merkstave- the Rune of Ice in Opposition. It denotes egomania, blindness to the world around them, stealth and ambush.
"So, no change there?" mumbled Ranma aloud.
"Lord?" asked a puzzled Hayate.
"Just thinking out loud," responded Ranma. So her spells are ice-oriented?
Her personal Rune is Hagalaz, specifically wind oriented. Her main use of Hagalaz-wind is to guide thrown weapons and poison powders or used to produce a whirlwind to make her exits and arrivals more dramatic. She has recently begun using it to enhance her ability to leap.
What about her brother?
Tatewaki Kuno uses Uruz, the Rune Of Aurochs. His use of it is instinctive and automatic, increasing his stamina and ability to take damage.
Ranma raised his eyebrows at that. Sort of like the Breaking Point did for Ryoga?
More so. The amount of damage he can take is beyond that of the Ryoga Hibiki from the original timeline. However, in this timeline, Ryoga Hibiki possesses the Rune Of Aurochs and the Rune of Giants cooperative which place both his physical strength and stamina beyond that of this Tatewaki Kuno.
Ouch. I'd like to see those two go at each other.

Ranma looked around. Had there been a flicker of blue light? Nah.
Continuing. Kotaro Kuno, Tatewaki's older brother, is often absent as he attends a technical college. Unlike Kodachi or Tatewaki, his personal Rune is Fehu - the Rune of Cattle. It grants him no physical abilities, merely a sense for the making of money.
So what are MY Runes?
Kenaz - which grants you insight. Ansuz linked to Ingwaz - your mother had that one put in at birth.
Uh oh. What's it do?
Male potency and prowess.
At birth? I've come to the conclusion that my Pop and my Mom are both crazy, just different kinds of crazy.
That has not altered. Continuing. Laguz the Water Rune, Ehwaz the Two Horses Rune, and Sowilo the Sun are your personal Runes. Using those, you have mastered through martial arts focuses special techniques. Healing yourself and others utilizing water, speed enhancement and dimension door through Ehwaz, and Sowilo grants you the uses of techniques like Hadoken and Cleansing Fire.
Ranma smiled. He got special martial arts manuevers out of it, therefore that was cool. So if Kodachi actually fought me, I'd beat her?
The odds have remained as they were previously of her being able to defeat you. Unless you are disabled or surprised, her victory is not a high-rank probability.
What about Pop?
Essentially the same as yourself. His applications are merely different to reflect his personal style.
"So, what about this Tendo place?" asked Ranma, wondering how much of THAT had changed. "Old friend of yours?"
"Yes, as a matter of fact," said Genma, stroking his chin as he watched the scenery go by the train's windows. "When we were younger, we were friends. I've not been in touch of late, but I'm sure he's turned out well and I've heard he's had three daughters."
"Okay," said Ranma. "Retainers?"
"No, actually it's a marriage arrangement," said Genma, eyeing his son.
