"Apparently," said Asuka from her position atop a box.
Shinji considered that for a bit. "Were we friends?"
"Like we know," said Asuka with an unladylike snort.
"They used a spell to open my memories, and then another to close those memories," said Rei.
"Why would they do that?" asked Shinji.
"Those memories were... unpleasant," stated Rei in her usual quiet manner.
"It was Master Ranma's attempt to cast Ellran's Immortal Animation that caused us to appear," said Maya, going over a beginning spellbook that had seen better days. "What the spell should do is form a brightly glowing wisp that can do a number of small tasks, what they refer to as a 'sylph' around here. A sort of elemental spirit. Instead what he got was Rei, and eventually us. Froderick tried to cast the same spell, following the steps that Ranma accidently modified and got you and then that 'Chii' girl."
"Yeah, I saw her, she's cute," said Shinji. He flinched at the glance given him by Maya and Asuka, who immediately picked up on the idea that they were not so cute.
"Then," continued Maya, "Ranma cast Riofald's Arcane Enhancement. That gave each of us the knowledge we needed to perform duties as the Arcane Maid Team."
"Not to mention copying all he knew about the martial arts," said Asuka, hopping down and going through a quick set of martial arts moves.
"Somewhere along the line we gained elemental affinities," said Rei quietly. "I am ice, Asuka is fire, Maya is wood."
"I wonder if I've got any," said Shinji, concentrating and holding his hands out.
"Javan's Restorative was used to try and bring back my memories," said Rei, shifting her position and looking uncomfortable.
"There... something," said Shinji, practically grunting as he concentrated with everything he had on what he was guessing was his magic.
