Then had come pain.
She worked with hot grills and oil and food. She'd been burned a number of times over a number of years. She also worked with razor-honed knives and cleavers for exactly the same reasons.
This had dwarfed every cut, scrape, burn, hot oil spatter, training accident, and other incident she'd ever had in her sixteen years of life.
Worse was that the lightning had seemed somehow alive and that it had crawled within her. Adding an element of violation to the whole event.
Then it was gone, fading to blackness and sweet oblivion.
"This is a problem," said an androgynous voice.
Ukyo was aware a moment later that she was dead. The fact that she was transparent and floating in a sort of white vapor nimbus in a graveyard kind of clued her in.
The winged and also transparent woman hanging in midair over the center of the graveyard also kind of fit the whole image.
"You are not of this world," said the 'angel' as it considered her. "Nor was this your time."
"Can't really argue with either point," said Ukyo.
"This is most improper," said the angel. "I cannot restore you to life, you are not of the world. Instead I have a choice for you to make."
The air seemed to open up into a hole of white radiance.
"You may go on to the afterlife, and find peace and happiness in the hereafter," said the 'angel'.
"Okay, that's about what I'd expect," said Ukyo, who was wondering how she was talking without breathing.
"It's best not to think about things like that," said the 'angel' as he/she continued to consider Ukyo. "The other choice is to be reborn as someone of this world much as your associate managed with Nagisa."
Ukyo almost didn't hesitate. Peace and serenity, or getting turned into something.
"This 'rebirth' doesn't require me to be a kid again, does it?" asked Ukyo.
"No," said the Spirit Healer.
"Then I need to return," said Ukyo. "They need to know about this."
