Soun couldn't be more ecstatic if he tried. At long last, his and Genma's dream of uniting their families and schools would be achieved. Once Genma arrived with Ranma everything would be signed and sealed. The Tendo Waterworks was practically floating on air as he raced to the family shrine to tell his beloved wife the good news. Upon reaching the shrine, Soun reverently bowed his head at Kimiko's picture and started to speak. "Oh dear, I have wonderful news! My old friend Genma is coming soon with his son Ranma as a groom for one of our daughters! Isn't this wonderful?"
As soon as Soun said that, the glass in the picture frame cracked from top to bottom. Then the shelf that the shrine was on fell off the wall and landed at Soun's feet. Before Soun could react, one of the light incense sticks fell on Kimiko's picture and set it on fire. Soun quickly snapped out of his shock and tried to save his beloved wife's photo. Unfortunately for the Tendo family, Soun was unable to save the photo in time and the last picture of Mrs. Tendo went up in smoke.
The loss of his wife's last photo was too much for Soun to bare. Tears were in his eyes as he looked up to heaven and shouted out, "Why! Why has this happened? Why now of all days?"
Kasumi was the first of the sisters to respond to Soun's crying and she gasped out in shock when she saw the ruined shrine. The loss of the shrine and her mother's photo hurt Kasumi just as much as it did her father. She then heard Soun's shouting and decided to make the loss of her mother's photo mean something. In a nervous manner, Kasumi hesitantly asked, "Father, what were you talking about to Mother before this happened?"
Soun said in a shook up manner, "I was telling your mother about the arraigned-" suddenly Soun froze as the implications reached his grief stricken mind. His face then hardened and he almost growled out, "I was telling your mother about the arraigned marriage. Your dear mother must hate idea of one of you girls marrying Ranma if she would show her disapproval this badly."
