Fairly New Life: Talk to the Glove. [Episode 214211]

by Greyman

“So, what are these classes like?” asked a bored Ranma after breakfast.

“Huh?  Oh, the usual, I guess,” explained Nabiki.  “More or less.  Of course, Daddy’s reputation always pulls in quite a few of the stronger local talents.  Then too, interest in classes has picked up recently.”

“Why’s that?” asked a mildly curious Ranma.

“You’ll see,” growled Akane as her father’s wood faerie opened the hall’s doors.

Boys entered.  Lots of boys.  Boys bearing flowers.  They rushed passed Ranma, Nabiki, and Akane, and offered them to a slightly bemused Kasumi.

“Does this happen often?” Ranma asked.

“Every, single, day,” ground Akane through her teeth.  She waded into the boys, pushing them back.  “Stand back!  Don’t crowd!  Out of the way, you jerks!”

“Uhm, shouldn’t we help?” Ranma wondered.

“Nah.  Akane can handle it,” Nabiki smirked, and latched possessively onto his arm as girls started to enter the hall in a slightly more sedate stream than the boys.

Ranma looked momentarily confused by her action, then was distracted as one of the boys standing slightly apart from the huddle turned and pointed his way.  “Halt, stranger!  You seem overly familiar with the fair Kasumi’s sisters.  Who art thou?”

“Well, I’m …”

“Wait!  It is customary to introduce one’s self before asking first!”

“Then why did …?”

“Silence!  Know that I am Kuno Tatewaki, rising star of air and metal craft, Heir of Kuno Koucho, and reigning champion of the junior division of duelists, known as the Steel Lightning!”

“That’s a new one to me,” Nabiki murmured.

“Well, if that’s the way ya wanna do introduction,” Ranma  muttered and stepped forward.  “I’m Saotome Ranma, practitioner of all crafts, and heir to the school of Anything Goes Faerie Craft!  Uhm.  Oh, and I’m staying here while…”

“Under the same roof as the virtuous Kasumi!?” Tatewaki decried.  “Nay, foul knave, I shall not allow it!  Never!”

“I don’t really see…”

“Silence, knave!  Though shalt collect thy meager belongings and depart these premises here with, or face my wrath!”

“Does he always talk like that?” Ranma asked the sisters.

“Oh yes, pretty much,” Akane agreed.  “For someone lacking in fire craft, he blows a lot of hot air.”

“That’s not exactly true, little sister,” Nabiki corrected.  “He is able to back up his incessant boasting with blade craft.”

“Oh, is that so?” Ranma asked with peaked interest.  “Ya fancy yourself as a cutter, do ya?”

The slight purpling at being blithely ignored faded somewhat as Tatewaki nodded firmly.  “Indeed.  Thou would be wise to heed the words of fair Kasumi’s sisters and depart least I take off my glove.”

“Nah, go right ahead,” Ranma said, and offered his cheek.  “I ain’t gonna be driven out by words, ya know.”

“Uh, Ranma,” Nabiki warned, “he really is almost as good as he thinks.”

“‘T is too late,” pronounced Tatewaki.  “As he has ignored my generous warnings, there shall be no escaping his fate.”

“Talk with the glove,” Ranma taunted and tapped his cheek.  “I ain’t listening to ya till I hear a glove slap.”
