In a village like Konoha, one of the most important days in a child's life was the day he or she first entered the Ninja Academy. For civilian children, the academy represented a chance to become more respected and known than they ever could be as a farmer or a merchant. For the shinobi children, the academy represented a line of tradition and the chance to take their place among the greats of their clan. The day was so important that every ninja who had a child entering the academy would take the day off so that they could lead their son or daughter to the academy. Many of the villagers would close down their businesses for the day and go to see who was entering the academy.
The biggest attention getter this year was Naruto Namikaze. Everyone knew that Rei had been planing on enrolling Naruto this year and a bigger crowd than normal assembled to see Minato's son. Naruto wasn't loved by everyone in the village because of the Kyuubi, but the vast majority thought of him as Minato's son rather than as demon brat.
It was really easy to spot Naruto and Rei as Rei led Naruto to the academy. Naruto was currently wearing a pair of camouflage pants, a black t-shirt, and a dark green coat. There was a small frown on Naruto's face because he wasn't wearing his favorite orange jumpsuit. Rei had been extremely firm that, while the jumpsuit was fine for practicing at home, it was NOT allowed outside the house and family training grounds.
As soon as the Namikazes reach the academy, Naruto bolted to go hang out with Shikamaru and Shino. Rei had a smile on her face as she slowly shook her head. Naruto could be so exuberant at times and that was one of the things that Rei treasured about her son. While the kids played, the parents stood back and started talking. Some were talking about how they were sure their kids were going to do great. Others were using this time for political wheeling and dealing.
Everything suddenly stopped when Sarutobi appeared at the podium on the front steps of the academy. The old leader looked over the crowd and gave a small speech. In the speech, Sarutobi talked about how proud he was to see so many young potentials and then went on to enumerate the virtues that every Leaf Ninja should hold dear to their hearts. After that, he wished everyone good luck and declared that the school year had officially begun.
