Saffron was much too surprised to do anything but let the two drills of wind cut him to ribbons.
Who wouldn't be surprised if through an ocean of fire hot enough to turn most stone into slag came an unscathed - not to mention undressed, being covered entirely in dark grey fur, with the exception of a prehensile tail which was lashing around freely for the first time, and the inside of the large, round ears on the side of the being's head. Throw in how the fire withdrew from its freedom above to cover the body of the creature like a living coat, and wind ruffling both that fiery coat and the fur while holding up the creature with demonic eyes - and you've got a very intimidating image.
Especially when the most he expected to see was a singed magical weapon falling towards him from where the holder had been vaporised.
Ranma felt nearly euphoric as he descended in a controlled speed, watching as the source of his latest and most lethal woes fall to the ground in little more than bloody chunks.
There was no possible way those pieces of scattered flesh and bones could regenerate, and if they did, Ranma was ready to stop it.
For some reason, he didn't feel nearly as bad about killing someone as he would have suspected ... not that he would have shed a tear for the demented Phoenix in any case.
The thought of death brought to mind Akane, who might be well on her way to joining Saffron in the afterlife.
The wind seemed to heed his call, and Ranma found himself plummeting for the Dragon Tap, where rested a flesh-coloured object about Akane's size on the edge of the pool between the taps, half emerged in the water.
Coming to a landing, Ranma felt the earth soften beneath his step, making it pleasant for his uncovered feet.
Ranma was all but five steps away on the surprisingly soft rock when he saw Akane's chest rising and falling in respiration.
It didn't matter that she was as nude as the day she was born - all that mattered was that she was alive!
It was first now that Ranma allowed himself to be distracted by the odd phenomenon that had taken place around him - such as the coat of fire he seemed to have acquired, and the dark fur he saw on his hands.
"What the Hell?" he exclaimed as the realization of fur covering his body caught up with him.
Quickly looking himself over, Ranma could only come to one conclusion.
"I'm a RAT!" the former human bellowed in outrage. Wasn't it enough that he gave part of his manhood to the Art? Did he now have to surrender part of his humanity to save Akane? "Damn it, why can't I ever catch a break?"
Akane stirred.
Ranma flinched - he did not want to have his friends and family see him this way.
There was only one thing to do ...
