Ranma had no idea where he was - not that it really mattered ... he had been wandering the wilderness for close to a year and suffered no hardships or run into familiar or strange faces.
This strange connection Ranma had to the elements had most decidedly worked in his favour.
He still had the coat of fire, and it had spread to become a pair of pants as well, causing him to emit a soft glow like a dying ember.
And plant-life responded to his need for food, liquids, and even entertainment.
A gourd formed shortly after he ran, and he used it to store water.
Fruit trees and berry bushes would spontaneously erupt from the ground and provide their bounty when he felt hungry.
And a bamboo grove practically spat a traverse flute at him when he wanted some entertainment. Though he didn't know how to play, he learned quickly, having nothing but wandering, maintaining his Martial Arts skills and getting a hold on his 'affinity' with nature on his schedule.
After two months of practicing, Ranma found out a neat trick: Making the wind play the instrument for him. All he had to do was keep it near him and keep the holes uncovered - it made for good background music when he trained.
He had really gotten adjusted to his new form, and was starting to forget about the troubles he had left behind.
Had he not been on his own and out of trouble for so long, Ranma might have recognized the danger of letting his guard down.
Which is why Ranma was very surprised when the ground vanished from under his feet in an unseen cliff.
Ranma found himself pushed up by the wind that rushed to keep him from falling.
Still, it was enough of a wake-up call for him to notice something was off about the black abyss beneath him.
"What's this?" he asked himself.
