Pluto's Plague: Misdirection [Episode 216561]

by Kestral

Everyone thought it was something he'd picked up during the Plague. They were wrong, but it was a handy explanation and allowed him to keep his real Talent hidden. Not that he knew what it was himself.

When he saw a door that his father didn't, hanging in midair and sparkling blue, he knew what it was. He'd seen it before after all, when tumbling through the worlds. Shortly after THAT whatever-it-was that was so freaking malevolent had spotted them and in the instant between realizing that there was a trespass and before It brought a fragment of Its awful gaze towards them, Ranma had gone through a door exactly like this.

"Greetings."

As before, there was the odd rotund little man with the needle-sharp nose.

"Yo, Igor - ain't it?" asked Ranma, a little nervous but determined not to show it. "Didn't know you could follow me here."

"Oh yes, yes," said Igor with his usual grin, folding his hands in front of him as he looked down the table. "The Velvet Room is part of, well, a realm that touches many other universes. Whether you call it a Sea Of Dreams, Dreamscape, Twilight Zone, or whatever - the realm itself neither knows nor cares."

"Guess so," said Ranma. "Did ya know about the Plague? Or that I was gonna live?"

"I know many things," admitted Igor. "Yet the concerns of without interest me less than the concerns of within. Through your presence in that world, I can see more clearly and am thus more interested."

"Don't suppose you know what my Talent is? Supposedly it's real strong," said Ranma, thinking maybe it was a secret weapon but it would be handy if he knew what it was.

"You are as yet still a child, and your Talent will come of age when you do," said Igor mysteriously. "Until then you have your Persona abilities and can summon those you already have access to. Keep in mind that in your case, you still have access to these two rooms."

Ranma glanced over to where he knew he'd find two more doors. "Yeah. Seems like there's those in every city I go to. Finding 'em is a pain though."

"The Training Maze is where you can battle rogue persona and occasionally acquire allies such as you already have," said Igor. "The other room allows you to check your Social Links and status as well as store things you wish to keep safe but not carry with you."

"Figured that much out," said Ranma. "Something you wanted to say to me? I figured there was a reason that you popped in like this."

"I merely extended an invitation," said Igor, waving away the point. "You may also fuse persona here to create new ones, to register your persona, or to combine arcana with weapons."

"Pop says that people who use weapons rely on 'em, and that weakens 'em," said Ranma.

"To some extent that may be true," said Igor, "but in other ways - your 'Pop' is an idiot."

"Well, maybe ya gotta point there," said Ranma, thinking specifically of something that had occurred when his father had apparently gone around stealing food in the hospital and washed it down with a bottle of something called 'Phospho-soda' which was apparently used to prepare people for surgery on their stomachs. Man, the sounds and smells wafting out the bathroom had been enough to rattle even HIS stomach.

"You have a good selection so far," said Igor, indicating an empty section of table before him.

Ranma hesitated before reaching out his hand and allowing the three cards he'd gotten so far to put each in its place.
