“Let me help you up boy,” Prometheus drew Ranma to his feet as Ranma awoke.
“Can’t you give me some more tips or something? Usually people at least give me some sort of idea of the premise behind the technique before telling me to figure the rest out for myself.”
“Why would I do that my boy? You already got the technique right. Didn’t you notice, right before you passed out. Try it again. Right now, that rock over there, you know how it’s done,” Prometheus tried to sound encouraging.
Ranma just looked at him curiously, “No I didn’t.” It should be noted that Prometheus had not spoken with anyone for a few millennia: immortal he might be, but that didn’t prevent one’s people skills, including lying, from getting rusty.
“Just trust me on this one. I know potential, and you’ve got it now. Just will yourself over there; what could it hurt to try?”
“Alright then,” Ranma figured maybe he could get some more tips once he failed. He fixed the image of the flat rock a few dozen feet away in his mind. Then he just half-heartedly tried to be there. Reality seemed to bend for a second, and he was there. He was one hundred percent certain that had not happened last time. Before he had been trying everything he could think of, from meditation to high energy techniques, and had barely done anything. Now it happens with a thought?
“Well done, well done indeed. See, I told you that you could do it,” Prometheus was politely clapping.
“Don’t act so innocent! It’s totally obvious you did something while I was knocked out! And what is with the halo and smile act!” Ranma was shouting.
Prometheus sheepishly dispelled the glowing ring above his head. “Sorry, I couldn’t help myself.”
It became obvious Prometheus wasn’t going to continue.
“That wasn’t the important part! What did you do to me?” Ranma wasn’t amused.
“I just made a few tweaks. Sure you could have got it eventually, but that technique’s always a bit dangerous for a mortal, and you’d never have mastered it in a human lifetime. I’ve just given you a bit of a leg up on the problems. It’ll still take training to develop, but even right now you could go an impressive distance, and take quite a lot along with you on the trip!” Prometheus boisterously announced.
“What kind of tweaks? Are these going to backfire on me later in crazy side effects?” Ranma had experience with power ups, and most of the time they would end up going wrong at the worst possible time.
“Oh please, I’ve got more practice at shaping life than you have at martial arts. Don’t worry; you helped me at your own risk. Some might call it reckless, charging in not knowing who you might offend, but I call it courage. Where I come from that deserves a reward. Don’t question it. Look my name up: I have given a gift to humanity before, so that they might have civilization. This gift to you is so that civilization might take a new step, free itself from where it has stalled.” Prometheus was feeling a bit magnanimous.
“Usually people don’t reward me for saving them. I just do it.”
“And that is why you deserved this gift. Remember that you have a greater purpose now. I must be off now though. You know, places to be, people to see.” Prometheus was about to leave.
“Wait!” Ranma had a chance to talk to someone that was actually grateful and had the power and knowledge to help, yet suddenly, he had no idea what to say.
“Don’t worry my boy, I don’t doubt that we’ll see each other again, whether tomorrow or many, many years from now.” Prometheus disappeared.
Ranma stood there for a few more moments.
“He never said how to get back!” Ranma panicked for a moment.
“Wait, I still have that portable hole right, where did I put that?” Ranma searched around for a bit before finding it in his pocket. Then he slapped his forehead.
“I’m an idiot. I don’t need that anymore.” Ranma fixed the Tendo dojo in his mind and reality seemed to once again shift around him.
