Ranma felt a subtle twist, and suddenly he was in the Tendo residence. Unfortunately he was in the bath room. Apparently Akane had decided to have a relaxing bath after her difficult day.
For just a moment Ranma thought he might die. Then he realized just how useful this technique could be. He quickly focused his mind on the first location he could think of, and disappeared just in time for the bucket thrown at him to pass through his previous location.
He felt that little twist again, but this time he pushed it off and reached his desired destination. He’d have to figure out what it was disrupting his technique.
He’d come to a nearby park. It wasn’t nearly as dangerous as other destinations would have been.
He needed to get a handle on just what his limits were on this power. What a perfect time to test it out! It wasn’t that he didn’t want to go back to get pounded, no not at all.
Prometheus had said he could take quite a bit of mass with him, but just how much, and how did he make it come with him. He already saw that his clothes came with him each time easily enough, but did he have to be carrying anything he wanted to move?
Ranma walked over to a nearby rock, one a bit large for such a title, but too small to call a boulder. He yanked the rock from the ground; it only weighed a couple hundred pounds. He then shifted himself to a point a dozen feet away. He hadn’t even felt a difference in difficulty.
Ranma set the rock down for his next test. He touched the rock and shifted again. The rock was at his original location. That would make things a bit more difficult. He walked back to the rock. He didn’t think there was anything different between touching it and carrying it. Maybe… he touched the rock again and shifted, this time the rock came with him.
There must be some sort of intent involved in what came with him. The first time he had touched it, but hadn’t really thought of bringing it with him. This time he intended to be at his destination with the rock, and he was.
That actually made this power more useful. If someone grappled him he could shift out of their grasp, and they wouldn’t be brought with him.
Now for a distance test, Ranma imagined Tokyo Tower, and he was there the next instant. Again, there was no strain involved. That wasn’t a useful test at all.
He ignored the few people who were staring at him, certain that he hadn’t been there a moment before. There was a place he knew that he could try to get to: he concentrated on a much more distant location.
He attempted to shift, and reality seemed to make a ninety degree turn and throw him in a blender. Ranma shifted back into reality and swayed on his feet, collapsing to his knees as his mind reeled.
He had tried to get to Jusenkyo, but he was only at the edge of the valley. He was fairly certain that he hadn’t reached his distant limit though. When he had attempted to shift there it felt like he slammed into a wall.
Ranma rested there for a moment. Now that he thought about it, it wasn’t really so much a wall at all. A wall implied something solid and unmoving; this was something different than that. It was chaotic, and nonsensical. It felt like ice, and lightning dancing across him.
Ranma stood up and started walking. Just because he wasn’t able to shift himself there didn’t mean he couldn’t just walk there now that he was already at the edge of the valley.
This time he’d just walk by the guide’s hut first and have the guide help him to the spring he wanted.
“Wait a second, why am I walking away now?” Indeed Ranma was now walking away from Jusenkyo.
Ranma turned around and strode towards Jusenkyo; he wouldn’t be like Ryouga. Ranma kept his eyes forward, pointed straight at the pass he wanted. His eyes weren’t going to leave that tree right there.
“Wait a second, I don’t want to look at that tree.” Ranma thought for a moment. Then he turned around as if to leave.
Then in an instant he spun and was dashing towards the pass.
“You can’t stop Ranma Saotome!” Ranma was running fast enough to out run most cheetahs.
“Hahaha hah, now what are you going to do… why am I running away again?” Ranma was slowing to a stop as he realized he was running away from Jusenkyo.
Ranma paused to think this plan through. “Maybe there is some sort of magic to prevent people from coming to get themselves cured?”
“I don’t want to be cured, I just want to gaze upon the greatness of Jusenkyo!” Ranma shouted as loud as he could and began walking towards Jusenkyo.
Moments later, he was predictably walking away again. “Well, it was worth a shot anyways.”
Ranma stopped walking. “I can always come back later once I figure this out anyway. I really should have finished testing my limits first anyways.” Ranma justified. Then he shifted away.
