It was a Small Island out in the middle of the Pacific. It was Currently Owned by a Private Individual who had bought it from the US government "Because I liked the anime!"
It was Maccross. And Temp Hunter, second richest person in the world, had been Busy since then, Building a full sized working mockup of the SDF-1. Sure, he had to replace the Reflex furnaces with ten times the number of Nuclear Reactors. Sure, he had to use thicker Bulkheads made out of Weaker Material. But there was plenty of Empty Space in the Designs, and the Design was sound.
So without a thought, he threw the engines to full power and lifted off, the Almost SDF-1 lifting off from its Docking cradle and sailing into the sky like a Beached Whale. It’s Bow Splitting into two parts Even as it turned to face the enemy. With the Crackle of Sub-atomic Partials, then Energy built, and the Reflex Cannon fired, punching a hole clean through one of the alien ships.
It also melted the entire Almost SDF-1 to a Blob of Metal goop which sank to the bottom of the Ocean. Guess almost is not quite enough.
