It had been enough for Genma to get some alien DNA off of it.
The Kryptonians had been a highly evolved and ancient people, one who had developed a society much like Crystal Tokyo and purified themselves of much of their emotions. They turned their back on greatness and developed a sterile society that was stagnant, but continued to develop in minor ways.
One of these ways had been genetic engineering performed on themselves. Initially this was because Krypton was a pretty hostile environment. Eventually the highly technical sterile society had required those measures just to keep the species within aesthetic and health parameters.
The superpowers normal to some degree to all Superman stories were the result of this.
Kal-el had been found and raised by a couple of farmers. Japanese secret agents had scoured the ship a half hour before the Americans could show up and came up with a glowing chip of green rock (one of several wouldn't be missed) and a hair. They had been placed in seperate containers and shipped off. That had been a few decades past.
If Genma had paid any attention to international media, or much of anything outside martial arts, he might have realized what he had.
Genma ran across this sample and contacted his good friend (actually someone he'd met in high school named Professor Natsume) and after getting a promise that his son would marry the Professor's daughter (unless Ranma were born with big bulgy eyes or something) Genma had gotten the genetic mix required and Nodoka's "free medical exam" had allowed for the implanting of a "seeded" ovum.
Though, as some would later discover, messing around with Kryptonian DNA could produce odd results.
