Sakura prior to the bell test had looked as if she hadn't gotten much sleep. Her CURRENT appearance was even less rested.
Kakashi didn't think it likely at all that Sakura had switched from Sasuke to Naruto. Sakura's eyes tracked Sasuke as they waited for him to make his appearance. Naruto glanced in the direction of Sakura every so often, but seemed more nervous than amorous.
Sasuke pointedly ignored everyone and brooded, occasionally taking something that looked like a soap bubble out of one sleeve in order to examine it.
Well, it was time to broach the subject of the new mission. The thing was... Kakashi thought this was NOT going to be well received.
BAMF!
"Is that another homemade lunch from Hinata?" asked Kakashi. THAT was a safe topic to broach.
"Uhh, yeah," said Naruto, glancing at the large pack.
"We can get a week's food out of that," pointed out Sasuke.
"Well..." said Naruto, rubbing the back of his head.
"Good," said Kakashi, causing the three ninjas to look up in startlement. "That will actually make things easier."
"It will?" asked Naruto.
"You should consider yourselves lucky," said Kakashi as he took a seat on a treestump. "Most E-class missions include things like clearing a field of weeds, playing 'travelling companion' to a minor bureaucrat, rounding up a stray pet, or something similar to that. This is something a bit more interesting."
"Oh?" asked three gennin, showing both a healthy dose of skepticism and a thin dawn of hope.
Kakashi felt he'd stalled about as long as he could. Time to drop the other shoe. They REALLY weren't going to like that Team 7's first mission was:
