And now her father was making it clear that he had expected her, or one of her sisters, to go and take her friend's spouse as her husband. That simply would not work, and not just because polygamy was illegal the last time that she had checked. The thing was that she didn't even like the idea of marrying him, as he was too much of a friend for her to feel romantic things about him. Oh, she could probably help plan an evening out for her friends, but it wouldn't sit well for her to go through it herself.
As it was, the Morisaki clan already had a rivalry with the Kamishiro family, and that wasn't even due to any real discord between them. They merely wanted to prove that they were better than the other side, and might have gone to some depths in a few instances, but they weren't actively trying to kill each other. Somehow, she rather doubted that she'd ever want to let the Tendo family become true enemies of the Morisaki, seeing as even Sayumi, who merely wanted to test her mettle against her family's traditional rivals, would likely fight hard against any who would 'betray' her.
Having this come up really sucked, as Akane didn't want to be in this position. There she was, with her father standing firmly behind his push for her to marry his friend's son, and on the other side was her friend's marriage, which she could not bring herself to cause grief. By her own reckoning, they belonged together, and not only due to the fact that they had dedicated their lives to unarmed combat. No, Sayumi was his support and moral anchor, and he was her drive to get out there and really do things. They fit together perfectly, and she knew that their talent made them a couple to watch.
Of course, she found herself wondering just when it was that Ranma would need to use magic, while:
