Ages ago, an ancient race had grown cold and logical and sterile, but had seen two paths open to it nonetheless. With the destruction of their world of origin, they split into two groups, each to pursue the avenue of power that most appealed to them.
The old ways of science were pursued by the majority of this group, the Sun Culture that went on to settle a world named Krypton.
The new way of magic, with the heart of their old world crystallized into two gemstones, one dark and one light, was championed by another group that had gone out to an entirely different world.
At some point the line blurred between magic and science, but the two extremes had not crossed.
The fragmented Kryptonian DNA that Genma had inserted into one of his wife's ova had strengthened itself by adapting and spreading. As Ranma grew, so did the influence of that strain. At age five he'd been able to last five minutes against a wrecking yard's car crusher. At age eight he had been able to lift an ambulance and fly with it.
At age ten, Ranma and his father had entered an ancient temple. Five tons of stone slammed into Ranma when Genma missed a trap. Ranma had been hurt but he had fared better than the corridor.
At age twelve Genma had been exploring some ruins in India when they'd run across the chi master Dhalsim. The amount of chi burning away in Ranma had impressed the master and Ranma had learned a few odd tricks. He hadn't been able to learn fire generation or the limbic kai but there had been other techniques spoken of.
Then came (at age fourteen) this visit to a village in the Bayankala Mountain Range of Qinghai province.
