"Well, crap," said the faux-feline. "That didn't do any good. Maybe I need to switch things up a bit more?"
The scene froze, turning black-and-white in the process. Sasuke Uchiha stood over a defeated Naruto, who'd tried the 'reasonable nonviolent/nonthreatening' approach to getting the missing-nin to return to the village and try doing this through appropriate channels. Kabuto, alerted by Naruto actually being halfway competent through the years, was seen pushing his glasses back up into place with one hand in the background.
Okay, dead Naruto. Sasuke goes off to join Orochimaru. Sakura lacks any encouragement and eventually becomes a medic but then dies when she tries to bring herself to kill Sasuke and freezes up. Hinata and the village - pretty much destroyed.
Akatsuki eventually gets their Tailed Beast Weapon. Madara/Tobi/Obito betrays the group's goals to go for the genjutsu thing. Genjutsu - so he traps everyone's minds in a dreamworld and everyone starves to death.
Yeah. Bad Ending.
The catform shifted, becoming a gnomish figure which tapped a buckled boot on the now marble floor of the space/time bubble. He waved a hand and things rewound to a suitable "soft point" in the timeline. How to fix this?
Maybe a companion? Who to use... AH! Fix another Bad Ending and try this!
"AAAAEEEARGH! Stop it! Get off! Get off! Get off!"
Krypto knew it. This intruder didn't understand though. The dogs of Krypton and the dogs of Earth had some similar qualities. This was one.
"I'm killing you, you stupid animal!"
Loyalty. Whether it was to a pack or a person, or the person was the pack. Loyalty given wholeheartedly was not easily revoked.
Even with the pain. And death by kryptonite poisoning was very very painful.
The Kryptonite Man tried to hold the dog off even as white fur changed to green under his focussed radiation. "Don't you understand, I'm killing yoaaaargh!"
SNAP!
He staggered, the blood dripping off his muzzle. Loyalty. Something the Kryptonite Man wouldn't understand. One last howl, choked with pain, and he laid himself down next to his foe's corpse.
A good dog to the last.
Poof!
"Woof?!"
"Yes, you're alive again."
"Woof?"
"No, you can't go back."
"Urf!"
"Because you're dead there. You were a good dog though."
"Uff."
"Because there's a Child of Destiny, a Prophesy about a messiah or savior or something, and he could really use some help."
"Urf?"
"No. No kryptonite. Lots of magic getting hurled about though. Also - different sun and different rules of that world. Basically you'd go in looking like your rebooted form, have Tailed Beast levels of chakra renewed by solar radiation, a few jutsu you'd be able to use regularly-"
"Uff?"
"Reboot form? Oh. They did another of those reboot/reset/crisis on infinite yadda-yadda secret war thingies. This is what your reboot form looks like."
A shimmer revealed the 52-version of Krypto.
"Yipe!"
"Yeah, kind of a tiger/dog mix ain't it? Well, retracting claws too, I think. As I understand it, it was a pack predator on Krypton that got domesticated and genetically engineered and such."
"Uff?"
"No, you keep the enhanced intelligence. Also a good measure of the strength and durability and speed and stuff. That just makes sense because Kryptonians were supposed to grow up under high gravities and be genetically engineered and evolved and all. You just won't be rolling over and crushing mountains."
"Uff?"
"No, no flight. Not initially. I'll hold it out for something later, and when Naruto learns tree-climbing, water-walking, and that ninja long-distance leaping run travel you'll be able to listen in and learn that sort of thing too."
"Uff?"
"No, not that kind of messiah."
"Urf?"
"Yeah, they're called jutsu. That just means technique and that can be anything from a spell to a martial arts technique."
"Urr?"
"You'll be able to speak to other dog-types like the Inuzuka hounds, and the Inuzuka can understand dogs that they've bonded with or associated with, so there's a chance for communication that way. I wasn't planning on having Naruto able to directly understand you."
"Uff?"
"Yeah, Naruto Uzumaki. Name means 'maelstrom' and has a lot to do with the spiral motif going around in there. So. We got a deal?"
