That was why she was currently sitting, trying to keep up a conversation with her friend. "It's okay, you know."
"How exactly is this supposed to be okay?" Ami sourly asked, poking a stick into the ground. "Things are spinning off pretty strangely."
"I know, but that could be okay. After all, we're getting new friends."
"And that is supposed to make me feel better?"
"Don't you like people anymore?" Minako gasped.
"How can you ask something like that?! I want to become a doctor like my mother just so that I can help people."
"Oh, right. Well, I didn't mean to come off saying that you're a jerk, or something like that."
Stiffening slightly, the blue haired girl turned to face her friend with her eyes as wide as possible. "A... 'jerk'?"
"You have been complaining... a lot."
"It isn't that I'm whining you know. I'm trying to point out what could be going wrong. Some things just should be allowed to happen, and I don't want to drag outsiders into fights."
"That's understandable."
"Isn't it?" Ami blurted, and leaned in towards the blonde. "We don't know what will happen if we bring in other people, and I don't want to see them hurt. Just imagining my brother getting into some sort of trouble...."
"You shouldn't worry about that so much. We'll be there to protect him."
"Of course I'd be there to watch out for him. He's too important to to me to not do that."
Giggling, the long haired girl grinned. "We already understand that."
"Good. I'm glad that is at least set."
"Certainly. I mean, everyone knows that you have a 'brother complex' thingie."
"'Thingie'? That isn't a real... 'Brother complex'?!" Ami choked out.
"Don't you know about that sort of thing? I would have thought that you be the one who would have the information about that sort of thing. But that's okay. Watching you act all obsessive is really fun to watch, almost cute, in a way."
"'Fun to watch'?"
"You do tend to focus on him a lot. Every time something with him comes up, you get all uptight, and act pretty possessive," Minako cheerfully pointed out... until she really took a look at the twitching that her friend was doing. "Not that we're thinking less of you for that...."
"So what if I keep an eye on my brother...."
"Now, take it easy...."
"I watch over him because I love him so much!" the normally reticent girl screeched.
Minako looked over the surprised stares that her companion was getting, and wondered if she'd just made another major misstep.
Only the sound of walking feet could be heard in the forest, as even the wind had seemed to stop. Every animal in the area had pulled back from the menacing aura moving through their territories, as their instincts screamed at them to stay away. This was obviously a predator after some specific prey, and nothing was going to purposely give him a target to focus on. The figure didn't even look natural, with a head that was about as large as his torso, and stumpy limbs that didn't look like they should have been able to carry him at all. With his wispy hair and beady eyes, there was no way that this figure was going to be mistaken for a normal man.
Then again, the sake bottle that he was dragging along didn't help in that regard. Nor did the panties peeking out from the collar of his shirt seem to be at all natural. However, he did not seem to care, as one of his shriveled hands reached out to fondly stroke the lacy garment.
Sniffing the air, he caught the scent of something appealing in his path, and so the gnome cackled, knowing that he'd be able to get what he desired soon enough, while:
