Duke Leto Atreides calmly waited for Gurney to return from his scouting mission. While he was waiting, the duke was leafing through reports that his spies had collected on the other great houses. It was frustrating to Leto that most of his day had to be spent preparing counters to the machinations of his fellow nobles. He'd much rather spend his time governing Caladan or just being with his beloved Jessica and young son.
The duke looked up when he heard the door open. He then smiled when Gurney walked through the door and bowed his head. Leto stood up and said, "Welcome back old friend. What have you found out about our mysterious guests on that island? Do we need to firebomb the island?"
Gurney shook his head and smiled. "There's no need for us to worry my lord. By the whims of fate, you have been graced with a gift to strike terror in the hearts of all who would threaten you."
Duke Leto shook his head in confusion. "Speak plainly Gurney and save the lyrical prose for your music."
"Alright sir," Gurney said as his face became firm showing why he was the Atreides' Warmaster. "The island is now inhabited by a village of warriors known as 'ninja'. They possess control of the elements and can do other feats that I would have previously dismissed as fantasy. I was given a brief demonstration of the range of the ninjas' skills by the village leader known as the Hokage. He's apparently an old ninja who has lived through several wars. The Hokage told me that he's eager to have his village placed in your service." Gurney's face became even more serious than Leto ever thought it could become. "Sir an average ninja of medium skill, what they call a chunin, has enough skill and power to kill a squadron of Sardaukar. The Hokage mentioned that his village of Konoha has 20,000 chunin and 5,000 even more elite warriors known as Jonin currently available."
The duke let the information sink into his mind and his face turned ashen white. Such a force could threaten the Emperor and possess a serious risk to his own forces. About the only thing keeping Leto calm was the fact that the Hokage wanted to work for him. However, even that didn't completely set Leto at ease. "Why, why does the Hokage want to work for me? Furthermore, how did they arrive on the island?"
Gurney grunted and replied, "These ninjas are semi-mercenary in nature selling their services to whoever is willing to pay. However, they are trained to ultimately obey the lord of their lands. They can't accept any clients unless the lord approves of them lending out their services and they expect to serve in the lord's military. Since they ended up here, they see you as being their new lord."
"As to how they got here, they used a jutsu created by their previous Hokage to get here. Their village was apparently threatened by a creature that could launch attacks equivalent to the use of Atomics. For all their power, these ninjas are less technologically advanced then us. However, they are not to be underestimated."
Gurney snapped his fingers and Leto watched in shock as a raven haired teenage girl appeared two feet away from Gurney. The warmaster smirked and said, "May I present Chunin Kurenai Yuuhi of Konoha my lord. As a demonstration of his village's usefulness, the Hokage asked me to let her shadow us unarmed. None of the other party members noticed her boarding the ornithopter and she's remain undetected until now. I'd say that we'll find it beneficial to work with our unexpected residents."
Duke Leto looked at Kurenai and then smirked. Yes, he could see that it would be very beneficial to work with Konoha. These ninjas might finally be the key he needed to insure that his rivals could never harm the Atreides again.
