Sasuke listened, but didn't show any signs of it outwardly. Hopefully it was not more fangirl problems heading his way.
"Yes, I heard, some sort of 'time/space jutsu' gone wrong, and Naruto's four years OLDER now."
Sasuke frowned slightly. Naruto wasn't exactly a friend, Sasuke didn't HAVE friends, but they'd cooperated in the past when things like the 'Engagement To Sasuke' cards had needed to be rounded up and destroyed.
"More than that, apparently he did something major, he's being put with a special group of some kind," said one of the girls who normally didn't engage in the gossip.
"Hinata? He's your fiance, what do you know?"
That startled Sasuke. Hinata? The quiet kunoichi who was the heir of the Hyuga family? And Naruto?! Quickly Sasuke settled his face into a brooding scowl rather than betray any curiosity.
"A-ano, I just heard th-this morning," stuttered Hinata from her usual seat. "He's on a special team the Hokage put together. Th-they're meeting this morning. I don't know when he'll get back."
"I WAS FIRST!" said Ino as she crowded in the door.
"NO! I WAS FIRST!" argued Sakura as she got jammed in the door with Ino.
"Why you!" said Ino, wrestling Sakura in the doorway.
"Hey, come on guys, who was first?!" asked Sakura of the room.
"Ino," said Shikamaru, otherwise apparently still asleep.
"Ino," agreed Choji.
"Ino," put in two of the other boys.
"NONE OF YOU WERE EVEN LOOKING!" yelled Sakura at the crowd.
"Then why did you ask?" asked Shikamaru, thinking this was really very annoying and tiresome.
ANBU, the older shinobi, they all looked at him. Before they realized it was Naruto, they had all come to the same basic conclusion.
An executioner. This was the sort of person who had killed, killed often, and killed very efficiently. This was someone who had been through the killing grounds and emerged on the other side.
A couple of older civilians saw the sixteen year old boy and saw the Fourth Hokage as a boy.
Others heard that the foxboy was back, stepped forward to throw an insult his way, and stepped back as soon as those cold blue eyes swept past them.
Two ANBU stepped forward as he approached the Hokage Tower.
Another, who was wearing an ANBU uniform except she wasn't masked, opened the door but stayed just within the threshold of the tower. "Naruto Uzumaki."
"ANBU-san," said Naruto in reply.
"You are being assigned a proctor," said the woman, who then dropped her voice to where lip-reading was necessary. Which DID explain why she'd went without a mask. "It's mainly to keep people from panicking and to give the old man a chance to run damage control."
"Understood," said Naruto.
"I am Yugao," said the maskless ANBU over her shoulder as she turned to lead him in. "Your proctor is:"
