"I dunno," said another villager, watching the boy go by their position. "After last week, all I see is a little boy who apparently missed his father. I can't see That Which Must Not Be Named doing anything like that. Right, Duo? Duo?"
The second villager turned around, looking for his friend but not seeing anything except a nice guy from ANBU... oh.
"A little more caution might be advisable," said the ANBU before vanishing in a smokepuff.
Toltiir brandished the old vinyl record briefly, then loaded it carefully into a CD player and pushed play.
Trumpets sounded as the Superman theme began playing.
Toltiir nodded. Naruto was Naruto, but he was also Kal-El due to the seal array he'd inspired Minato to make and a blatant crossover he'd thrown in.
So he wasn't quite as powerful as Superboy would have been, but the chunks of Kryptonite weren't nearly so fatal. Weakened him, gave him a level of pain and nausea that made functioning difficult, but NOT fatal in the short term. Long term, yeah, it could kill just about anyone even those NOT of Krypton. It was radioactive after all.
However he could also borrow a page from that TV series that had been on one universe.
"Tenten of Team Gai, reporting as ordered, Hokage-sama."
"At ease, gennin," said the woman in the trenchcoat and ninja-mesh outfit as she leaned against a post in the training ground and licked a lollipop.
"I've simply requested your presence here for training purposes," said Minato Namikaze. "Naruto?"
Tenten looked curiously at the eleven-year-old. Odd, she'd pictured someone shorter. Maybe it was related to the rumor running around that he'd awakened some sort of kekkei genkai?
"I've heard your accuracy is such that you can hit a target ten times out of ten shots, or one hundred times out of a hundred." Minato gestured for Naruto to take a spot near one of the targets.
"Yes," said Tenten. "I'm a weapons specialist, preferably ranged weapons."
"Good," said the Hokage. "We're going to test that. I want you to start throwing things at Naruto as fast as you can."
Tenten saw the boy apparently ready and decided that was her cue. Kunai and shuriken went out.
Naruto blurred and was abruptly holding her weapons.
Tenten blinked, then her eyes narrowed and she began throwing things in earnest. Shuriken, kunai, senbon, throwing knives, darts, impact-triggered explosive spheres, caltrops, butterfly knives, hatchets. Faster and faster she went as it was obvious this kid was keeping up with her. Spears, chakram, spikes, lunch... oops.
Naruto hadn't dropped the lunch as he had the other weapons and was just looking very uncertainly at it.
Tenten threw the last weapon she had on her, the kunai she'd made from that odd glowing rock that Lee had found.
She was very surprised when Naruto caught it and then dropped it before clutching his hand.
She was VERY surprised to see what almost looked like green-tinted burns on the hand he'd caught it with.
"Yes," said Maito Gai hours later. "Lee showed up with the rock several days ago. Tenten took the rock and made a kunai out of it, as the slight glow of the rock made it potentially useful as a signal."
"Where did Lee get it?" asked Kushina, now working for the Hokage office.
"He said an ANBU dropped it, but he was unable to catch up with that ANBU and return it," said Gai.
"I see," said Kushina.
"Might I ask what the material is?" asked Gai.
"It's called 'kryptonite' apparently," said Kushina. "The glow surrounding it brightens around Naruto and is poisonous to him. It also affects other life, most of which dies eventually from uncontrolled growth of individual cells in the body. It was one of the things we saw flashing around on displays during our resurrection sequence."
"Well, Lee got rid of it after developing some odd side-effect," said Gai. "He seems fine now, though he's developed a new jutsu with that side effect."
"I thought Rock Lee had a problem with his chakra coils where he could use neither ninjutsu nor genjutsu," said Kushina.
"Yes, that was the case," admitted Gai. "However, he's recently begun-"
