One of the ANBU sighed and flashed the code signal for a #18.
Which was 'Hinata Hyuga is having confidence issues while trying to visit Naruto Uzumaki' - something that had become common enough to just put it down as #18.
Mikoto Uchiha, watching from a window, signalled back with a #3. Which was 'observe but do not interfere.'
Hinata finally went ahead and knocked. Kushina opened the door immediately, having had plenty of time to arrive.
"I- I- heard that Naruto-kun was-" began Hinata, who then blinked as somehow Kushina Uzumaki had managed to whisk her inside and into the room in an eyeblink.
"His hearing was too sensitive and he wasn't able to control it," said Kushina. "If you could just keep an eye on him for a little bit?"
Hinata blinked at the sight of Naruto in a circle of seal-papers, then glanced up again to find that Naruto's mother had vanished.
Sakura picked up the little necklace with the green stone. It was pretty enough, but what was it doing here?
Looking around her parents' yard didn't provide any clues.
Finally she just put it around her neck. Eventually the owner would see it and she could return it to them then.
"Okay, we're here," said the Rock-nin. "Konoha has a barrier system in place to warn of intruders. Once we cross that, they'll be on alert."
"Any chance we can lure the targets out?" asked another Rock-nin.
"Not good," said the leader. "We've got an alternate way in though. The barriers are weakest at the entries - where the visitors are SUPPOSED to be. They typically put chunin at those gates. If we take the guards out, we'll have a few minutes before the hidden watchers determine that we're intruders."
