Neji Hyuga, her classmate, simply looked back as cold and aloof as ever. "It was your fate to lose this match. As soon as I was your opponent, your defeat became inevitable."
"Let's try this then, shall we?" said Tenten, biting the edge of her thumb and then slapping that hand to the ground. "Summoning Jutsu!"
BAMF!
Neji, his Byakugan active, analyzed this and didn't find a genjutsu. Which meant that this girl's fate wasn't quite as lowly as he had previously believed - as summoning contracts were often versatile and capable of great power.
That the creature she'd summoned was small and apparently helpless was merely an indication that the girl's chakra reserves were not great at her current age.
"Growlithe!" said the little cutesy creature.
"Growlithe," said Tenten, pointing at Neji. "Flame Burst!"
Neji had a moment to wonder about jutsu-using summons before a pillar of fire sprung up around him and it became obvious.
"Yes, Father," said Hinata, bowing before her clan head/father/sensei. "I have a summoning contract that I was able to get because of a friend."
"Oh?" asked her father. "Demonstrate."
Hinata nodded, nervous as her father watched, but it WAS the sort of thing she had to let her sensei know. She used a knife, as the whole biting-of-thumb thing didn't heal as quickly as a thin knife-cut would, and then slapped her hand down. "Summoning jutsu!"
Hiashi looked at the small creature, frowning slightly.
"Hey, Hinata, wassup?" said the owl, waving a wing in greeting. "Need help with your homework?"
"What is that?" asked Hiashi.
"Hmph, grumpy ain't ya?" asked the owl. "As far as species go, I'm what ya might call a Glaucidium cuculoides. As far as professions go, I'm an expert in cryptology. And no - that ain't got nuttin to do with graves."
"Cryptology?" asked Hiashi, slightly less hostile.
"Yuppers," said the owl. "Codes, codebreaking, ciphers, and crossword puzzles. That is my field of expertise. Course, as I'm a species of pygmy owl - I'm diurnal and small with excellent eyesight. Not as good as the little girl's here, but then I can stick around and spy on folks when she wants. Right now, Miss Hinata here can only summon us little owls. There's me, Snowy and Rusty."
"Talkative," said Hiashi.
"Well, there's kinda a family resemblence here, you two ain't fighting, and this is a dojo," said the owl. "I kinda put stuff together. Name is Hedwig, by the way."
