In this world, this time, Jiraiya had discovered that imperfections in the seal caused Naruto to be dumber than his parents. In this world, that had been fixed. In this world, he had a better idea of what it meant to be an 'awesome ninja' and clear goals.
The first thing he'd done was start sneaking books and scrolls. He wasn't all that good at reading, but now he had a friend who could help him develop that skill. Once he COULD read without getting a headache and without difficulties getting the more complicated symbols translated, Naruto's learning began to skyrocket.
Sneaking became the second thing he was very very good at. There were many places where he was not welcome. He knew though - if he was going to be an awesome ninja and stand a chance of getting to Hokage - he had to know how to do awesome things. So he ended up going somewhere early and reading a scroll before the Hokage caught him.
"Naruto, you shouldn't be here, and that scroll is forbidden," said the Hokage, frowning at the boy sitting on the floor reading that very scroll.
"But I need to be an awesome ninja!" pointed out Naruto. "Can't do that if... huh. Hang on a second, this doesn't have half the handsigns... KAGE BUNSHIN NO JUTSU!"
ba-damf damf damf damf damf dumpf!
Six regular looking Naruto all looked at the malformed parody sprawled on the floor.
"Yech," said all six Naruto.
The seventh and mutated Naruto became a puff of smoke.
"Hmmm, that's interesting," said the Hokage, smirking. "Let me tell you a couple of things about that one, but from now on you have to get permission from me first before you read anything in this tower."
"Huh? Awww," protested Naruto.
"It'll help you in your training, actually," said the Hokage, verbally dangling the hook.
"Okay, fine. I agree, believe it!" said Naruto, sounding a little surly about it.
"Okay then," said the Hokage, doing a quick Kage Bunshin himself. "Now then..."
Across the Leaf Village, several people looked up at the feeling of Grave Danger and wondered what the universe was getting ready to dump on their collective heads.
"-and that's how you can use your shadow clones to not only spy, but to learn things faster than you could alone," said the Hokage. "Keep in mind you have to dispel your clones regularly though - otherwise the shock of the additional memories can knock you out."
"Whoa," said Naruto. "Thanks jiji! I've got to go try this out!"
"Yes, Hokage-sama?"
"You've been watching Naruto Uzumaki this past week?"
"As you commanded, Hokage-sama?"
"And?"
"He forms one hundred shadow clones," said the ANBU. "Half of these are engaged in exercises for chakra control, the other half are studying various subjects."
"Good," said Sarutobi, sounding quite pleased. "Wait, what sort of subjects?"
