If things had remained as they had been, Naruto would not have witnessed the Hokage displaying what exactly was meant when one talked about being 'awesome' as a ninja. He would have continued to assume that being able to sneak in and scrawl graffiti on a water tower was showing how awesome he was.
If things had remained, an ANBU would not be facing the Hokage right now to report on how Naruto had managed to learn about Kage Bunshin and how to use the learning factor to good advantage.
"You can remove the mask," said the Hokage.
"Thank you," said Yugao Uzuki, gratefully removing her mask. "My allergies have been killing me."
"I noticed," said the slightly amused Hokage. "Go ahead."
"Now that he's gotten better at reading, he's studying everything," reported Yugao. "And I mean that literally, he's studying beginner's levels texts on subjects as diverse as Metallurgy and Gardening."
"I see," said Hiruzen Sarutobi, nodding as he made a gesture with his pipe. "No particular focus?"
"None so far," said Yugao. "I'm not sure how much he retains either. Though I have caught him tending some plants."
"Considering his mother's line, I would expect him to take easily to fuuinjutsu and wind techniques," mused the Hokage aloud.
"Early evening, he seems to go with taijutsu practice before wrapping up. The problem is that he doesn't have proper instruction in that and that he's liable to make his style even worse without a sparring partner that knows things that he himself does not," said Yugao.
The Hokage pondered that. There was a lot he couldn't do without tipping his hand, but he thought that-
